I recently did a little bargain shopping on the other side of town and picked up what turned out to be a running (with issues) 87 Big Red in very rough condition and a busted front tire. I took the tire/rim off and wire brushed and painted the rim and put a new Deestone knobby on it.

While the tire was off, I decided to change the fork oil. Hex bolts were not a problem but the forks were a b getting out. When I did finally remove them I realized they were frozen/seized. (Yeah, seems to be happening alot to everything lately) No oil came out when I totally removed the hex bolts and the top caps were rusty.

I flipped them upside down and I am letting the tops relax in a bath of metal restore to remove the rust.

My question is-Is there any sense trying to get them to free up. I have read on another thread that they will be pitted due to rust and will not hold fork oil even with good seals.

Thoughts? Advice? And I am not ready to take SX forks from the rat pack just yet.;)

Pics to come-barnboy.
