My buddy brought me his 86 200x for some carburetor work and new rear axle bearings. Also for me to ride and play around with which I'm excited about https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201022/4365d0ccb91cf562981e3d59426ba82c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201022/1d629df680754af9b3442483ed166b84.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201022/d8c15149bcf882c6e2c39c72f39aa787.jpg

Nice looking 2nd gen! They are alot of fun, not 350X or R fun, but pretty cool trikes!
Nice you get to dial it in and test ride at the same time

My second trike was an 84 200x which I bought in 87. The 86 is way more refined. Both are fun, but the 86-7 gets the nod. First gen parts are easy to find, It was a challenge coming up with the missing parts needed to get my 86 on the trails. This is how I found mine years ago

If you ever need to replace the clutch please remember the crank shaft nut is reverse threads , I can’t tell you how many of these I’ve pulled apart that were F*** up from idiots stripping them out .

Looks like an awesome find BTW , congrats .

I've almost done this before. Good thing I had an idea of how much force it needed to come off, and the 8 gallon air compressor wasn't plugged in. Impact = prolly bad idea. Sat back and thought about it for a sec.....oh sheeeeeeeeiiit. Lol. No damage done but I felt like an idiot. Close call.

Nice 2nd gen! Looks like a blast, never ridden one. Maybe some day. If you want an interesting read check out Dirtcrashers '86 200X build. Some serious knuckle bustin to get that thing out the door on schedule, did an incredible job for the time frame also.

Lol, challenge is putting it lightly, I'll be lucky if I ever find a grab bar and taillight for my 87. I've never rode a 1st gen but I'm really happy with my 87. That is in great shape RodKnockRacing.

I scored a PRM grab bar when they did one last run of parts before closing their doors for good.
There is a person in Maine that makes a nice replacement. Just look up ATD products on FB in the trike pages

Type in Craig Burton he lives in Maine. Or use ATD/ATC in the search bar. Hope this link works, he just made new swing arm skid plates for 350X

You may not want to hear this, but it's my understanding that All Balls bearings aren't packed with grease very well from the factory and your should carefully remove one of the seals and put more grease inside them.

Looks good. How did it come apart? My axle is tweeked just a little (can't feel anything riding, just can see it on the stand), and I was thinking of pulling it and having it straightened. However with the fact that bearings are tight, and it looks like it would be rough getting it out, I'm leaning towards leaving it alone, lol.

Yeah my 85 rear axle is tweaked also can't feel it riding

Yup, pretty sure I'm going to wait until it needs bearings . . .

I've always used all balls never had a problem with wearing out to fast. Now the bearings that were used previously were junk cheap no name bearings.

Rookie question...how could you tell the bearings were bad? Play in the axle when on stand?

These type of bearings are NOT supposed to be filled with grease, and most certainly, not packed full.

This same basic information can be gleaned from other bearing manufacturer websites.

"In some instances, customers have requested that bearings be lubricated 100% full of grease. Excessive grease, however, is as detrimental to a bearing as insufficient grease. It causes shearing, heat buildup, unnecessarily high torque, and deterioration through constant churning which can ultimately result in bearing failure."
https://www.nmbtc.com/white-papers/importance-of-lubrication-selection/

The recommended amount is often about 1/3, but that doesn't mean 1/3 of what can be seen. The total volume behind the seals accounts for the ball tracks, the bearings and the cage, which is generally only known by the manufacturer. When properly filled, it can appear there is very little grease in them.

There is no need to pop seals on new, quality bearings unless someone is just wanting to risk damaging the seal.

All Balls are China bearings and made to low standards. Some of their stuff I will use but not in a motor or high speed application.

I prefer SKF bearings, they last as long as any Japan made bearing.

I'm in the process of putting together "kits" with Japan bearings and USA made seals. Right around AB cost but better materials, no sticker or fancy logo, sorry.

I also have China bearings that will be 30% cheaper than AB, again, no fancy crap with it :D

I ordered over 400 seals the last order I placed. These "industrial" pricks charge me 35$ shipping for an under 1lb 8 x 8 x8 package, so I had to go big on volume.

Kills you to save money on parts only to get raped on shipping...

+1 for SKF bearings vs. China junk. There are places like intechbearing.com that sell SKF bearings and seals pretty inexpensively if you know which one you need. I rebuilt several mower gearboxes and ATV axles with their bearings and have not had a failure. If Dirtcrasher is putting the kits together, I would definitely buy them from him. All of the homework is done.
