1983 petcock

I have removed the petcock on my 185s and the bushing is still in it and am unable to remove it. Am I supposed to remove it. My new valve won't fit in the bushing and is a little smaller than the hole if bushing was removed. Does this matter

Grab it and pull it out with needle nose pliers . That’s the old filter .
Can also push it into the tank and get it out threw the cap .
