I am assembling the decompression system on my 185s and when I pull it, it tries pulling the decompression chord in instead of the cable inside. Why?

You're probably not seeing the whole picture.

From what you've said, I presume you have the recoil assembly off of the trike, and are testing it.

When everything is installed, there is a clamp on the cylinder head that holds the cable. Part #1-2.

That will hold the cable housing, so the cable is the only part that moves.

I mounted it and it worked for a couple pulls but it still kept pulling the intire chord in until it eventually didn't work

Try taking the cable loose from the lever that it attaches to on the head. Does the inside part move freely in and out? If not, the cable may need to be replaced.

Your tube is your friend.
Look up D-ray honda recoil
Then look for the one with the decompression system.
I think it's a 2 or 3 part video. It saved me from going crazy. I tried for 3 hours and couldn't fix it. Watched the videos and fixed in 15 min.
