I can't figure out how to get the sucker apart. I've got both sides off, and the stator removed(finally!). What else do I have to do in order to crack this thing open? Do I have to take this thing off (see pic)? Also, one of the corners cracked off. Can I get by with just two of em?
Thanks for all the help, guys. I don't have a manual for this thing, I couldn't do it without you guys. If I don't hit any more snags, maybe I can have it running in time to play in the fresh snow tomorrow. :-D

i belive that is the counter blancer cover if so no a good idea to put it together like that. and dont rush! check over the cases and make sure you didnt forget a bolt and dont ues screw drivers get a rubber mallet and hit the cases not hard just to jar it and i belive their is a certain side to set the case on so parts just dont go rolling out be carful OR
just box it up and send it to me
:D

Stretch, Xowner is right. That is the counter-balancer cover, and no it wouldn't be a very good idea to put it back together with one tab broken off. If you did, when the rest let loose, it'll take out your stator along with other case damage.
To split the cases: If you haven't already done so, you need to remove:
1. Clutch
2. Counter-balancer
3. External shift mechanism
4. Counter-shaft drive sprocket
5. All bolts (total of 10, I believe, all going from left case into right case) securing the left center case to the right center case
While holding onto the right-hand center case cylinder studs, lightly tap on the left-hand end of the crankshaft & counter-shaft with a plastic or soft-faced mallet. DO NOT PRY IN BETWEEN THE CRANKCASE HALVES WITH A SCREWDRIVER!!!!!
Good luck!

Thanks so much for the help. I just got it apart. Gonna clean it out really good and head to the junkyard for more parts tomorrow.

Good deal! Now go find all those tools you threw around the garage!

that piston got killed by detonation,,, make sure your stator and all ignition parts are in good shape ,,, so you don't do it again ,,, maybe a 50/50 mix of race gas will help too

I think I'm gonna have to break down and get a book on this motor tomorrow. I'm having trouble getting the shifting to work correctly. Grrrr....
