Little stinky things that are hiding inside of trikes. Some can be found with a quick inspection, others you'll likely only find after paying for them.

These are from a 185 engine.

What was snuck away under the drain plug/oil filter cover.

If a small pebble found it's way inside the engine, this may have done something, but otherwise, a loose piece of wire from this cobbled mess could have done more harm than good.

In case you're wondering what the filter is supposed to look like, here a pic with one beside it.
262337

From the same machine, and freaking me out a little more about the condition of the engine.
262338

No, it's not a partially melted dipstick. It's bent that way because it was the WRONG dipstick, and was bottoming out inside the cover, forcing it into the current contorted state.

Wrong, as in too long, meaning if they were going by it, they were running the engine almost out of oil.
Correct one next to it.

And we wonder how some people don't just plain fall over and die of stupidity!

I wonder why this machine didn't run.... from a 1984 ATC200ES. The machine was stripped down quite a bit by the time I got it. Scored an ATC350X headlight from the deal which is what I was mainly going after.

Wow that cam!, you should make something out of that. Only a Honda would continue to run with that cam, they never die.

I'm not sure if I have the cam any more, but I've never seen a cam worn that much before. Heck the fact you have the not worn part to show the wear is pretty amazing. I've heard of VW's from the 80's had cam wear problems and I guess the cam would do something similar, but that was under normal usage/high mileage.

Here's the orig photo for the craigslist post. It was far from pretty. They sold the tires before I got it, exhaust trashed, engine not much good but there's some parts. I mainly was going for the rear diff, the misc engine parts, and the 350x headlight shell.

A nail in the axle nuts, and a sock on the filter screen, does not a good honda make.

If someone uses a nail, at least it shows they're not willing to play wheel of fortune.

What type of sock we talk'n bout? Worn out generic brand, or new Birkenstock sock?

How bout this sprocket or ninja throwing star.
This was on my X when I got it. Also notice is not the 13t stock size.

The ol' skip tooth sprocket, for that grab and release traction effect.

On a positive note, I'd be relieved it wasn't welded on.

All of the following was found on 1 bike. Poor bike- stupid owner.
Start with;
"I need the brake pedal mount" no worries I have a saw-zall
or RVT those 2 piece wheels together and bolt them on the bike, that will be air tight without ant carriage bolts.
or here use this Kawasaki pull handle no brand loyalty here
My favorite, Hey, get some water pipe and a lawn mower muffler, that will fix it!
Crazy thing, the spray painted it, and the inside of the tank is almost spotless. Who knew?
MrC.

See what you can find.

Don't beat yer carbs, mmmkay.

Disassembled a carb and found a little round aluminum piece. Didn't see where it came from, just found it on the towel later. What the heck?
262821

See it yet?
262822

Ahh, now I see where it came from.
262823

Found some marks on the float bowl where it looked like someone had beat on it, presumably to stop a leaky needle or something.

Found a check ball where the pump needle should be. 262824.
Missing a couple other, apparently non-essential parts because it works, still a turd.

Trying to find a reason not to beat on it, though.

That aluminum ring in the carb is the guide the bowl index's on and the screw passes through it.

Rvt rim glue. Na we don't need no bolts for these 2 piece wheels we got rvt. I removed the rim from the hub, and the thing blew apart. Shameful.

Ahhhh hahaa

I know someone who's oil drain hose came loose on his Harley while riding and lost the clamp. He found a sparkplug on the road shoulder and shoved that in there to get home.

I bought my son a used, older chinese quad in pretty decent shape super cheap. Surprisingly it's in nice shape mechanically with the exception of electrical tape "sealing" up a leaking valve stem. I laughed and thought of this thread when I unwrapped the tape and the metal core of the stem was pulled right out of the rubber and it fell off in my hand. Why would electrical tape be the first thing to try? lol took me 2 minutes to pop in a new valve stem and refill the tire with air and he rode all day. :w00t:

No pics, but I'm sure many can relate.

I pulled apart a rear axle today that needed new bearings.

NO CENTER SPACER!

Luckily I had a spare. Why do people assemble an axle without this important part? :wondering

Also ran across this.

262995

Bolts with washers, OVER lock tabs. Can't use the lock tabs that way. Kind of good though, the lock tabs weren't destroyed. Ninja Star, sprocket.

Some people should never be allowed to own property, anything mechanical, NEVER tools and shouldn't be listened to when they give advice on how things work or on how to repair things.
It seems they believe that having a tool, qualifies them to use it, regardless if its the right tool for the job or if the item in questions is even broken.

I like shady ads on craigslist/Facebook, seems like a "Coil pack" is all that is need to fix many items. I called on a atc250es, was told it needed a coil pack, sure ok, I ask why the side cover was off the engine in the picture, again I was told it needed a "coil pack", I said ok, if I bring a "coil pack" with me it will start? Again they said it just needs one. I said ok! I will let them sit on that one, the price didn't reflect the abuse I would have to undo yet.
