Hey, I just wondered if someone could help me out. I'm digging through a random box of parts and trying to find a speedo drive gear for an 85 big red 250ES but don't know what It looks like. So 2 questions. Is it the same as an 84 atc200es gear? And would someone be kind enough to post some pictures of the part I need for the 85 250ES?

Also If anyone would have measurements of the distance between the axle bearing and fork where it sits and measurements of the inside lip of the dust seal that would be awesome but I'll settle for a picture. Thanks

The 250ES and 250SX both share the same drive which is based on which side the brakes are on, and what diameter front tire it came with in OEM form.

I've found about 6 different drives that seem to cover every ATC made, and they are all slightly different as far as the shape of the housing and the # of teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear.

The 350X, 250R and 200X DRIVES are shaped like the small letter "d". Te X and R rotate a different direction than the 200X, so the housing is not the giveaway.

The 200, 200ES, 250SX/EX, 200M, 200S, 200E are all shaped like the small letter "b", but all are different.

I'm not sure what your trying to figure out with widths in the front axle, but street bikes do not use the same gears or housings, they just appear very similar. Well there's one that works that was a very rare drive, but I find them and use the gears.

Expect to pay good money for an ES/SX drive as they are popular and hard to find. I have some NOS drives, NOS cables and NOS or used Speedo heads but they wouldn't be cheap, you will most likely never find a "kit", last kit I watched sold for near 700$ and that does not come with a head!!

If you need pics or more info, LMK...

Thanks for the help. I think the drive I have is for a CB550 motorcycle. I was hoping to shim it or file it down to use on a 1985 250 big red. I don't really care if the speedometer is accurate as long as it moves the needle, but doesn't sound like it's going to work.

Many of them will work with a spacer, most likely the drive collar may not fit your drive tab on your hub as street bikes use a different setup, so you will have to make that; You will also need to make a spacer. And you'll have to be creative to keep it water tight or your bearings in the hub will die as you must remove that seal and the street bike drive will not seal correctly. Like I said, similar but very different.

My only advice is to not do something that takes away the sealing of your front hub...
