My kick starter on my 1985 honda 250 r slips every now and then when you try to kick it. Sounds like it is striping a gear when it does it. I have been told that it is common on those year trikes but have never been told what it takes to fix it. I would really like to fix it any advice would be appiciated thanks in advance Glenn Oister

you will prolly have to replace the worn out kick start gear assembly.. you should be able to aquire still fairly cheap used on here or ebay.

my tecate one slips and my friends did too but he fixed it...it was because of a little bit of rust on the shaft that it kept getting hung up on...he got the rust off and it hasnt slipped again...thats most likemy my problem and yours too...i just push it down till it engages and then kick it

Okay when you say assembly do you mean the large gear and the shaft it rides on ?.

you will have to take it apart and look at it to be sure but if i were you yes i would look into finding a replacemnt gear because it sounds like yours is pretty much done.

My KXT is doing the same thing. Do you have to split the cases to get to it or . . .??

No. Just remove the clutch cover.

Thanks Jeb. I was praying I wouldnt have to split the cases and ruin the new gaskets I just put in.

im doing that right now on my 87 cr 250r, my kick wont hardly engage at all. i got the cover off and the pressure plate and plates out of the clutch, but i ended up not having a socket big enough for the lock nut. so i'll have to wait till tommorow to finish it, other than that..cake.

You put a gasket between the center cases??? Or are you just talking about your cylinder base and head gasket.

My 85 also was also slipping.
I took it apart and found slightly rounded teeth on both the large gear and the smaller gear. The ATC itself is in excellant condition and cannot have too many hours. What disappointed me was when I bought both new gears and I got them - they too had rounded teeth! I had expected to see nice sharp teeth but that was not the case as thats not how they are designed. There was very little slop otherwise as far as journals or bearing surfaces go.
What I did not check when I took it apart was the relationship of the punchmark on the gear to the shaft which may have been put together wrong.
If the shaft has wear marks and it's sloppy in the engine case I can understand why it would slip but I'm still not sure why mine was slipping.
Now that I have replaced the gears and assembled it correctly it works fine.

I tore my trike apart yesterday and the gears did not look that bad other than what you described just a little rounded. I ordered both new gears and a new shaft from service Honda. I am going to call them tuesday and they will advice me if the parts I ordered are still available. I am a little worried I will spend all that money and the damm thing will still slip since the gears that are in it dont look that bad. I thought while I have it appart about putting a hinson billet cluth basket in it and a 1988 clutch upgrade kit in it since I have it torn appart. Now would be the time to do it. Thanks for all the advise Glenn Oister
