Hello everyone. I'm sorting out my 185s, and am noticing that it oil bubbles out of the top of the head through what looks to be a missing bolt hole. I'm not sure if there's a head bolt that was never replaced or what. It's been like this since I got it.

Can someone tell me if it's just a missing bolt, or a vent hole, or what?

Thanks!

Here's a picture of oil bubbling out of the hole. Hopefully this link works:

I’m not able to open or view your photo, but your story sure does remind me of a poor mountaineer named Jed who could barely keep his family fed.

Look at the side of the head in this pic. See the tiny hole on the side of the head in the finned area just below the CDI trigger/camshaft area..... That bolt #15 in the pic is supposed to go in that hole and all the way thru the head (see the corresponding hole in the head gasket in the pic below the head)

Is that where it's coming out?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190926/3486048f255aaf2d75c714f5489cd4a4.jpg

We'll see if this works. I'm trying to use Photobucket, but the website says I'm over my limit. I've only uploaded 3 pictures, all of which are shared on this https://photos.app.goo.gl/tnFqTjbdCoadHM447

Maybe this one will be clearer:

So it would makes sense for the engine to leak oil through this bolt hole. Simply putting a new bolt in will fix the problem right?

Is the circled bolt hole on this diagram the one I'm picturing? I can't tell. If it is, this is just a missing 6mm Allen head bolt?

For those that don’t have a google account we can’t see the photos. In your photo above, like shortline10 said, you are missing the 6mm bolt, buy one from partzilla or ace hardware and install it.

Your missing one of the four valve cover bolts , part number 9 , yes still available from Honda , as for stopping the leak , it might , the valve cover is sealed with hondabond sealant and if that seal is no good then it will leak .
Install a new bolt and hope for the best .

Thanks shortline. I'll source that bolt and hope for the best.

Kind of ironic, the 185s pic from googled linked back a few posts is from my one site xD.

Also since there's no link to a source to buy the parts, here's the pages directly.

Bolt: https://www.partzilla.com/product/honda/90008-706-000?ref=dde6c45065b5c54eeb7a51ee146d248d08fbe5e8
Washer: https://www.partzilla.com/product/honda/90478-700-000?ref=dde6c45065b5c54eeb7a51ee146d248d08fbe5e8

The part shortline mentioned isn't quite the right part, it's the keeper bolt for the compression release which is a special bolt, not any bolt will work. The tip is machined thinner to ride in a race on the shaft. The photo was for a 200x which is a bit different.

Also note, there is 4 larger nuts and 4 smaller bolts that hold the valve cover on. I can see the nuts in the photo but the bolts aren't so easy to see at that angle. Here's that image from my site again as a reference. The photo it's missing two of the large nuts and 4 bolts that hold the valve cover on. The small bolt that is there is the one you're missing.

Thanks for clarifying that, PS2fixer. I just bought a 5/8 inch 6mm allen bolt and a rubber washer. I backed the rubber washer with a flat washer and tightened it so the rubber compressed a bit. I'm hoping that does the trick.
I still can't believe someone rode it around with a missing bolt.
