Hello everyone. I'm in the process of restoring a 1984 185S. The main issue I'm having is trying to find anything that is specific to 1984 models. This leads me to believe parts from 1980-1983 will carry over to my 1984 model. Is this true?

Specifically, I'm going to buy a new rear fender, probably a Maier reproduction. https://maier-mfg.com/12020-honda-atc185s-rear-fender.html

Will this one (marked 81-83) work on my 1984? Is there something I can check to make sure it'll fit?

Thanks everyone!

OK - first of all - Honda didn't make a 185S in 1984. 1983 was the last year of production for the 185S. In 1984, the 185S got replaced by the 200S which ran from 1984 - 1986.

Many parts swap over, many do not. With fenders - they are either 200S or 185S - they are different. You must figure which model you have. 185S fenders and seat come off like 250R and 350X. The 200S - the seat comes off only as the rear fenders are bolted down. Which model do you have????

Thank you so much for responding. I figured something was off when all my searches yielded no results! I was told it was a 1984, but it must be a 1983 185s. I'm attaching a picture of the tank I painted this weekend. So I have to assume the Maier rear plastic, which does bolt to the seat, is the correct fender to purchase.

That tank decal is 1981. Does it have suspended front forks?

What's the VIN on the neck of the frame? That will tell the story.

FYI - this is a 1983 tank.

I'll check the VIN this evening. It doesn't have suspended forks.

I would go out on a limb and say you own a 1981 ATC185S. New it looks just like this:

Yep, that's what it looks like. Thanks again for your input/help.

A lot of people don't know what they actually have and will just throw out a number for the year. 185s are good machines, unless you want to go fast. Then not quite so much for me. I prefer full suspension.

To be 100% sure you can run the VIN code on the link below, while you're at it, wouldn't hurt to run the engine serial number in it too to make sure the engine matches the frame. As stated before, some parts interchange, some parts don't, kind of the nature of all Honda's.

http://atvmanual.com/honda/79-atc-atv-vin-decoder

As far as knowing what fits your machine, once you know 100% what you have, you can look up the part on partzilla and go to the part page and it will list what machines the part fits. Example, the rear fenders for the 81 185S

https://www.partzilla.com/product/honda/80100-958-670ZA?ref=18fba6d2fbebe608c66fd1c7eeb31aabe00c4124

It says 81 and 82 are the same. The catcher on this method is, any tiny change makes the part number change and the interchange will miss some machines in some cases, but when the machine is listed, it's a for sure interchange.

I ran the VIN and it confirmed my ATC to be a 1981 185S. Thanks for the reference.

81-83 are all the same for the 185s besides the 83 had front suspension
