Ok I know if you buy a replacement foam filter (uni, moose, ect) you have to have the metal air filter core to slip it over. How about the k&n replacements? Do they fit on metal core or stand alone? I found a good air box and lid but no filter core.

I believe The K&N doesn’t require the filter cage .
If you ride in dusty conditions I wouldn’t recommend the K&N . Go with the Uni or factory filter and purchase a cage .

If I recall correctly, I have a 250ES with a uni filter with no core when I bought it. It works, but maybe floored it would suck in the filter medium. It's a machine I basically never ride so not 100% sure. My beater has a uni filter on it + metal core and it's lasted quite well.
I've also heard K&N is not ideal for dusty conditions, they breath better, which means it filters less. I'd still run a K&N if I had a new one laying around, but for buying new I generally go with the foam style. OEM designed it that way for a reason I'm sure.

the UNI air filter I just bought for my 250sx came with a innerspring / cage to keep the filter from collapsing.

Good catch, I completely forgot about that spring.
