Picked up a beater 85 and started it up and it sound's like 3 mice with hammers pounding on the valves. I changed the oil AND SET THE VALVES @ .003 " BUT IT STILL TICKS BAD. I Swapped the timing chain tensioner with another 1 and still no luck .. Any ideas ?

Timing chain may be stretched so bad the new tensioner is not helping and you may need a new timing chain. Mine did this so I put an adjustable tensioner on it and it quited down. I just wasn’t sure if I over adjusted it. I ended up swapping the motor with a good one a few months later

the tensioners are automatic rite ? the screwdriver can pull the plunger back but as soon as I let it go it pops back out on both used tensioner I have ?

also the oil was black, what's the possibility the screen in the bottom of engine is clogged not letting enuff oil up there ?

I remove the factory cap on the end of the tensioners and ad piece of heavy tubing , this will give you a little more life out of your timing chain . I’ve been doing this mod for many years with no issues and works on many Honda models .

Doubtful but you can check by simply removing the valve adjustement cover and check for oil .

It’s common on this motor for the chain to stretch beyond the tensioner limits so even a new tensioner will not help. The above mod will quiet it down or you can buy aftermarket with more adjustments.

I have an 85 I bought new a ton of miles but not any tic. could the cam gear be loose ? is it possible to pull the valve cover off with the engine in the frame ?

I went through this same denial process with mine....being around so many other Honda motors with thousands of miles and no issues. I really think it’s an overstretched timing chain.
