I would like to do a CR 450 or 480 in an 83-84 ATC 250R frame. Its been a dream of mine for a few years, and I remember oldfart mentioning it from back when. I want to know more about it.

i am still trying to get my friend to build a nother 480r. he talks about it but has yet to do it. all he really needs is 3rd and 4th. that is all that was wrong with the cr480 motor. his 83 250r is mostly a roller, just needs a swingarm bolt. he still has his modified pipe and kick starter from the first one he built years ago. he was talking more about building it with his tax return but he just spent some money on making his quad a little faster. oh well. i know he will not sell it to me to build other wise i would build it.

The only thing that comes to mind right off, is that the early CR 450cc engines do not have a counterbalancer, so, you will have a certain amount of vibration. Dean

I did this CR450 conversion back in late '82 or early '83 after reading about it in 3 wheeling. It was in my '82 250r I imported from the U.S. It was a very easy conversion with no butchering or welding. All I can say about it is while it was very fast, the taking off of the rear guard to kick it, the fact they are very hard to start anyway and the VIBRATION was terrible. Rubberised mounts made next to no difference. I was flat track racing it when coming into a corner I went to use the rear brake and the pedal went straight down. No brakes. The vibration caused the rear master cylinder to come away from the pedal. I hit the tire wall sort of side on, went over the bars and my right knee got punctured by a triple clamp bolt. Six weeks on crutches and plaster. I am sitting here now looking at the perfect hole in my knee. Ouch.

I apoligize if I am jumping into other's conversations but I would like to add one thing. The CR450 motor was one of the worst two stroke motors Honda ever produced. Dirt Bike magazine put together a "worst bikes of the past" article years ago and the CR450 ended up right near the top of the list. The 480's were worlds better in power delivery and ease of starting when compared to the 450's. The only open class Honda two stroke worse than the 450 was the dreaded 1984 air cooled 500R, stear clear. The 480 had a sweet, smooth power delivery that I rememeber well. Sorry if I interjected.

the 83 cr480 had the 5 speed trans where as the 82 cr480 had a 4 speed. the kick starter had to be modified, the top head to frame mount was cut off and not used and the pipe had to be modified. this was putting a 83 cr480 into a 83 250r. It did vibrate a lot and did brake motor mounts. but it was built by a high school student with limited funds and experience. The bike really did haul ass. I know it can be done much better now. i don't know about the 450 engine but i think it would be a really cool project and it should be done.

well, I got the motor for $40 and the frame for $20, so if I can get it to fit OK, then I will attempt the project. Mabey it will go together easy, mabey I will scrap the idea, who knows. This is for after my 86 TriZ is done.

you should build one out of the new trx like billy did on his computer.
