View Full Version : Which LED Headlight style should I stock for the 3ww shop? 200ES, E etc 6x4in

I've stocked the standard style in the 3ww shop, link is here: http://shop.3wheelerworld.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=304_307_315&product_id=436
I added a poll to gauge interest on which style of LED headlight people like. I know for sure the normal LED headlight fits the 200ES housing, and can be installed in the 200E headlight housing with the spring clips. Might fit other models too, just not sure off hand what ones. Anyway, the "angle eye" style ones are kind of neat, figured it could be wired with dims, or the buyer would have to wire in a switch of choice to control it independently. The angle eye ones are ironically cheaper, never had one in hand, but I suspect the build quality is similar to the other one.
I plan to order atleast one of these style headlights pretty soon, and I'm working on a "DC Power Kit" for the 200 series machines. All will be listed in the 3ww shop once I'm all set to sell them. Also I see the Angle Eye style ones are tested to run on AC power, so should work for any machine with atleast a voltage regulator.
Anyway, for those that like specs, jump to under the photos. I'm thinking the angel eye style, even if the angle eye part isn't used, it has the best specs/price.

I personally love the normal style I have on my 200m its super bright and fits perfectly in the original bucket and looks stock. I went riding few weekends ago and besides people losing their minds over how clean my bike was they really liked the LED modification.

Ahh yea I forgot about the 200M being very similar to the 200es. I had a few people interested in my LED headlight on my 250es (same as the standard style above). I had to make home made brackets to bolt the light into the housing but it fits and functions well. My 250es is ugly, so the LED was the main attention getter lol.

Wow, so far seems like not many people like the angel eye style lol. Just wondering, but would it make much of a difference for the blue angle eye style, but with out the angle eye part hooked up? It looks almost the same as the standard style. Just trying to weigh options, since they are about $10 cheaper whole sale.

to save 10 dollars I could be persuaded.

I like the standard. THe red wouldn't be so bad. The blue just pisses me off. Reminds me of those godawful headlights some people run that border on a giving me a migraine. LOL!!

Haha, well the ring light is optional to wire :P. I inquired about the angel lights to see what kind of shipping costs it will have. That might make a huge difference in the final cost per unit too.
In my mind, the angle eye part is kind of meh, not really needed, but just for like a day time running light it could see it good for visibility while not blinding other riders.
Might have to keep looking for other sources for the standard light, it costs more up front + shipping is $80 for 10. Total price isn't too bad for an end buyer, but with markup/mod costs it's going to be like $50 resale price + extra for the DC kit. The DC kit should be quite affordable though, I've dealt with the supplier I'm getting the regulator from before, and it's free shipping on large orders =).
Off topic a bit, but I'm also buying some lighting bulbs in bulk, targeting the 350x headlight bulbs first. Should be as cheap or cheaper than other options for the HM202 style bulbs. I have the tail light bulbs too, so could sell them as a set/kit for OEM lighting. I'll have to see how the 3ww shop works with different buying options.

Angle eye style seller hasn't responded yet, might be a week day only type of business. Since there's a lot more interest in the standard style, I made an order for them. 5x for now to gauge interest a little better, not much difference in price if I buy 30x so no point in counting my eggs before they hatch.
I did the match and the standard LED with wiring to plug into the OEM harness of a 200es will be $50 shipped (flat rate padded envelope, but the LED light is in a box inside). Not as well priced as I'd like, but the fact it fits the OEM housing and is plug and play should make it worth it.
Anyway, I should have the package in 10-30 business days, hopefully I get it before new years. Would be nice to have it listed before Christmas, but can't expect too much for the slow boat from China.

I'll PM you about the payment info.
As far as the machines you listed. The 200es is an 84 model, 200e was the model for 82-83, main difference is just shaft drive vs chain though. Both have regulator/rectifiers already, so electrically they are good. The headlight however is a bit of a weird case. The stock 84 200es headlight uses two clips/springs to hold the headlight to the ring around the light. If you have the 83 200e, it's bolted on. I'm pretty sure the clips will work on the 82-83 style ring though. Easy way to tell the difference is if you have the screw on the face of the ring to adjust it left to right. The part number for the clips you need is 33109-440-931 and is linked below (still in production). Two are needed, one per side. It's a tight fit since the LED headlight is thicker than the steel headlight housing, but I know other's have installed them in the past.

Both years of the 200M model (84-85) has the 84 200es style headlight stock, so it should already have the clips and such. The 200M also has the regulator/rectifier covered as well.
Also all 3 machines use the same wiring for the headlight (200E, 200ES, and 200M).
Let me know if you have any questions.

Well I received my order and they somehow got it wildly wrong and the packing was complete garbage. The stock connector that comes with the light is all busted up, no other major damage that I can see. Working with their customer support to see if they will send the rest of my order (4 lights missing), and see what they say about the broken connector. Depending how they send the 4 (maybe 5) lights will dictate if I'll ever order from them again. A plastic bubble mailer isn't suitable packaging, should have been in a box and packaged tightly.
Also worth nothing, the LED light they have is the new style, has a small one way vent and the bottom has a spot for mounting it now. The base mount is super heavy, no wonder the shipping was so expensive, and have no use for it on the 200es and similar machines. Might be able to sell them for other machines like the 250es though if the buyer is willing to build/fab a place for it to mount to (same mount style as a fog light).
EDIT:
Update on this, I guess they shipped 3 packages for 5 lights, kind of weird but I have tracking numbers now. I'll wait till I get the others before I start modifying the wiring.

i sent my payment for one headlight.
i have a 1983 200e and a 200m are they still a bolt, plug and play application?

More or less yes on the 83 200e and 200m. The biggest thing you'll need is the spring/clips to mount the light like the 84 200es used (Honda still sells them). I'm about 90% sure the headlight ring will work. I'll get some photos up once I get a chance to show the differences between the OEM lights vs the LED lights for mounting. The LED housing is thicker, so it's a bit tricky to get mounted to the ring, but it for sure fits the 84 200es headlight ring.

What’s the eta on these and if it needs to be rigged to fit I’m not really interested. I’ll just put the money towards something else.

I should have the last package tomorrow I'd think. Just want to wait till I have the full order encase there's issues and they have some dumb return policy like I have to return all to get things settled right.
I wouldn't count the mounting system being rigged up, it's the stock way the 200es headlight mounts. If I recall correctly, the 82-83 headlight bolts on at the bottom, no clips.
I found the old write up on these lights. This covers things pretty well. The stock 82-83 200e and 84-85 200m wiring has the requirements for the LED to function fine (regulator/rectifier). I also checked the part numbers for the 200m and both years used the same mounting system as the 84 200es. Here's the spring/clip that holds the light to the headlight ring, you need two for the 200e unless the headlight isn't stock for some reason.
Good write up covering installing the LED in the 200ES headlight bucket - http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/173600-Guide-Upgrading-Stock-Headlamp-to-LED-on-ATC-200-ES
Headlight spring/clip (2 needed) - https://www.partzilla.com/product/honda/33109-440-931?ref=7ad48d36c885e8761f42d7611431a372e5007629
Just to be clear, I replace the connector ends with the proper ones so it plugs directly into the stock harness, no modifying wiring or anything like that. if you have any more questions, let me know and I'll try to answer them as best as I can.
Anyway, if you do buy one of these LED headlights from me, it would be great if you could test fit it in your 200e machine. I'm almost positive it will work with the 200es headlight spring clips but I have no examples of anyone using the spring clips in the 82-83 headlight ring. I should have the 200e style headlight bucket/ring around somewhere, just not sure off hand where it's at right now.

Update on this. I have all 5 lights now. 2 of 5 have damage (paint worn off some on one, and the other has a broken connector). 4 of 5 boxes are bashed up pretty bad. Looks like I'm the first person to buy this product on their site so maybe their not as big of a company as I was thinking. I'm checking with my other China supplier to see if they can get them from the factory and resell to me, they package parts so much better in actual boxes and such.
I sent photos etc to their customer support, not sure what they will plan to do.

I got a small discount from them, I'll just pass on the discount for the "blem" one to whoever wants it.
I just got done replacing the wire ends and color code heat shrinking the wires. I want to run though a quick 5 sec power on test per light to make sure both brights and dims work 100% and wont be DOA for the customer.
Anyway, I ran the numbers and it looks like I'll need around $60 shipped for these. Shipping is kind of a killer on the price, hopefully the next batch I'll be able to order a little more bulk and get better shipping costs to me. After I test the lights, I'll get some photos up and make a listing on the 3ww shop. I have 4 on hand + one blem which is $10 off (has paint rubbed off on the back side of the light).
Also, caught wind that the 83-84 ATC250R headlight might be the same size, and mounts very similar to the 200es/200m. I'll have to pull apart the light I have and see how well it fits. There is no voltage regulator sock for the 81-84 250r, so that will be a requirement. I'll likely be able to offer a DC Power kit with the light. Sadly it will probably have to be installed near the neck/headlight area since the whole harness can't be converted directly to DC since the alternator uses an internal grounding for one side of the power generation coil. Also note the stock 250r headlight is 60w, this is 45w, but LEDs are more power efficient so likely still brighter than the stock lights.

Photos!
Also measurements:
LED Light:
Depth (thickest spot lens to back of heat sink): 79.5mm (3 1/8in)
Height: 108mm (4 1/4in)
Width: 168.3mm (6 5/8in via tape measure)
Mounting surface thickness 11.7mm (15/32in)
Stock Light (no socket installed):
Depth: 81mm (3 3/16in)
Height: 106.4mm (4 3/16in)
Width: 165.1mm (6 1/2, again via tape measure)
Mounting surface thickness: 10.8mm (7/16in)
As you can see, the LED light is ever so slightly larger. The extra mounting thickness + the width being a tiny bit wider, makes it a bit of a challenge to install theses with the clips. Very doable, just harder than the stock headlight.
Also note, the LED light comes with different wire colors than the stock Honda harnesses. I label the wire colors with heat shrink on the wires as seen in the photos. Also the wire is quite good, generally China wire is lacking copper, but these appear to be the full 18 gauge size and crimped nicely. Also when the light is on dim, the top row and one led in the center lights up. You can mount the light either direction, the side the lights up for dim is opposite from the side with the screw holes for a base plate.
I forgot just how bright these lights are, got to get blinded a couple times making sure all the LEDs light up correctly for the power on test (bright + dims).
If anyone has any questions, let me know.
