I went riding today on my Honda 1985 250r at little Saharah sand dunes( Waynoka, Oklahoma). I drag raced some quads and it seemed like when I reved up the engine and dumped the clutch it bogged down and the quads got a jump on me and I never caught back up. I was not running paddle tires just a knobb type of trail tire. Will sand paddle tires help it launch and not bog down. I didnt like getting dusted by those quads. Any advice would be appriciated Thanks Glenn Oister :(

a paddle tire is just going to make it bog down more with more traction.... it sounds like you have other problems.... maybe a jetting problem it shouldnt be bogging down expecialy if u are dumping the clutch

Are you starting in first gear?
Sounds to me like a possible worn out top-end. DO a compression test, and let us know how much PSI you have.

I am sure I am leaving in first. I went out on the asphalt and dumped the clutch and the front end came up and she took off like a bandit. I will have to get a compression gauge and check the compression.

maybe its over heating..... it still sounds like jetting to me if its bogging out though

Hello Bushwacker, are you going to go riding with us March 13-14 at LS?
With paddles on you will more than likely start in 2nd or 3rd gear in the drags. Yes it will launch very good, it will stand almost striaght up everytime.
I think you should pull your plug and see what it looks like. If it is black I would lower the needle one notch. Then I would run some plug chops and check it more. You might just need some jetting changes.

The compression guage showed 184 psi the plug is black to just showing some brown and is only about 2 hours running on it.

Its air filter or jets

So would you lower the primary jets first (the smaller jet not the main jet) ?. I am not sure of the condition of the reeds never have checked them as far as I know they are stock.
Another possibility would be leaking crank seals too. I would look at jetting and air filter to start off with though.
