I picked up a non-running 185 thursday night for $175, I don't know the year yet. I was told the motor was supposed to run when the guy got it but he couldn't get it to after he installed it. He said he thought it was the timing. I've tried everything I can think of and it still won't run. I put new gas in it and it's getting gas. I checked the timing, valve timing and ignition timing are both ok. It has spark. I thought maybe the air filter was clogged so I took it of just to see if it would run. I put my 200x carb on it, the X ran when I tore it apart. I even took the valve caps off to see if the cam was flat, it's ok. I'm just plain out of ideas. I'm gonna go put it all back together and see if it'll run, that fixed my 200x once when it wouldn't run for no reason. Please help me. Thanks.
sell it to me......end your torment :D

Ok, I'll sell it, make an offer.
I put it all back together and my brother pushed me with the 125. I finally ran. It makes really bad noises and smokes more than any thing I've ever seen. It sounds worse than any lawn mower I've ever heard. I think I'm gonna try the other motor tomorrow and see if it runs any better.

I just went to ride it again. It smokes so much. I swear I just increased the risk of lung disease for everybody on my street by about 20%. I took a picture of my street from my driveway about 3 or 4 minutes after I rode it. I'll have it up later on tonight.

That would be really cool if it was.
BTW, that was just from riding it down my driveway, up the street and back down it again. I'm gonna ride it again tomorrow and see if the smoking eases up any, guess I better check the oil first, huh?

So, what did you do to get it running? Change the carb? Oh, and when you push it does it have alot of compression? If it doesn't have alot of compression it ususally means the rings are bad, which causes the oil to get up where the spark plug fires, causing it to smoke.

Wow, you should get with the City and see if they will contract it out to kill bugs. If you kept it as is there would be no chance of ever catching West Nile virus in your town. lol
I would say the rings at least are shot. Time for rebuild. I never seen a smoke out like that that corrected it's self. lol

Actually compression is pretty good, better than my 125. Could valve seals cause this? Keep in mind that there's no telling how long it's been since this motor's been run, probably more than a year or two.
There are a few reasons for why it wouldn't run when I got it:
1. About a 1 mm gap between carb and intake
2. CDI was out of wack, the thing that turns was actually rubbing the little black box thing
3. Wrong tube from carb was hooked up to the gas tank, might have been the overflow
4. Who knows how old the gas was
You don't know how suprised I am that this guy got the wiring right after seeing how he put together the rest of it.
I think I'll probably get it running decent, paint it (it's already been painted once, I just want to clean it up a little), and try to unload it for about $300.
