Trying to install camshaft and everything goes together well until I tightened the two bolts that hold the cdi housing to the head. Once those bolts are tight you can barely spin the motor over at all. It's basically Rock solid. When the bolts are loosened it can spin over again. Can't figure it out but it seems like it's binding the cam up somehow. Anybody got any ideas?

New cam ? Did you replace the inner cam bushing ?
Might not be seated correctly . Pretty common problem .

Cam is not new. Just putting engine back together again. Bushing and thrust washer are both installed correctly

Can you post some pics? Been a while since I've been in one of those motors. Can't picture it.

Is your CDI rotor pushed all the way onto the cam and locked into that pin?

If it's not, it might be sticking out too far and binding up the works.

I'm confused though... Is it the CDI cover itself that's binding when you tighten it or is it the CDI base that goes under the cover between it and the head?

Better recheck that bushing , theirs nothing else that could be causing it to not fully go in straight .

Cdi rotor is not installed yet. Just the cdi base and once the two bolts are tight it binds the engine up254293

Are they the correct cam bolts? If they are too long that will bind up the cam when the outer case is tightened up.

I've had issues like this before. In some cases I used Dykem blue layout Ink, sprayed everything and as I tightened things, the ink rubs on the tolerance that is too tight, and shows me the issue.

I'm leaning more towards you're missing something easy, or we are missing another variable...

I know that the bolts are the correct ones. I have a spare head from a parts motor that I am going to try next and see if that does anything. This issue has just got me completely stumped. Never thought i would run into such a stupid roadblock on this project

there is a gasket and o'ring that sits behind the base cover, are they installed? If not, it may pull the cover in too far and bind, just a guess.

Haven't made any progress. I plan on trying to put a different head on it from a parts motor i have but havent gotten around to it yet. I'm still trying to come up with an explanation for what could possibly be causing this issue. Just can't make sense of it

Finally solved this issue that has been plagueing me for the past year. Turns out it was the housing for the cdi. I had another one laying around and I thought I'd try it just for laughs and it went on and everything spin freely as it should. Couldn't figure out the issue with the old one though. Looked it over well and couldn't see a problem. But anyways just wanted to update

I run into that problem a lot with Yamahas timing covers . Must have gotten hot , right behind the cam seal the cover puts pressure on the camshaft to keep it in place , also the correct thickness gasket is needed or it will pinch the cam .
