What grit should I use to refinish my plastic gas tank?

start with about 250 if you have deep scratches... work your way up to 400, 600, 1000, then I usually finish with 2000 grit.

I recently had good luck replacing the last few finest grades of sand paper with a mixture of rottenstone and paraffin oil during the process. You can get these at most wood working stores.

Basically you make a loose paste out of the rottenstone and paraffin oil and then rub with a rag. It seems to make the pastic real shiny and smooth.

is rottenstone the name of the product?? It would be nice to get outta 30 minutes of sanding if I can just buff it with some stuff on a rag.. lol

Yes, the product is called "Rottenstone" and is by a company called "Masters" or something similar.

Here's a link to Woodcraft's web site: http://shop.woodcraft.com/Woodcraft/product_family.asp?family%5Fid=7246&gift=False&mscssid=057B6ADF0D7C84C3DAE3A53D41802DFD

I don't think it is any faster than sandpaper but it is easier because it allows you to follow the contours better. Sandpaper always rips when you try to do goofy contours.

I used the finest grade for the finish polish and it looks pretty good.

dont just sand dry if you are.. wet sand it. Once you are done wet sanding, you have to go over it with a buffing compound. You can get it at automotive stores like napa. I use a medium compound to buff it, err used to till I found plastic renew.
