OK, this thing strat right up first pull, but won't idle for crap unless the choke is on. When the choke is on it idles very high, but soon as you turn the choke off it drops down and sputters or cuts out. I played with the screw on the left of the carb and that wouldn't help cause when it would kinda idle it sputtered and poped a lot. I was thinking timing maybe, any other ideas??? While I'm at it I should ask just how one times one of these things (if anyone is willing to write it), and also how you adjust the cam chain to make sure that is tight???? Thanks for your help guys

Check/clean the carb. Sounds like its not getting fuel.

I'm pretty sure it's getting fuel ok, cause when it does idle it is rough. I can also ride it around with the choke on and the throttle responds fine

The purpose of the choke is to restrict airflow but let more fuel in. I've run into this problem 100's of times before. It is usually fuel delivery or a dirty carb. It barely idles prob. because its starving for fuel.

Definitely start with cleaning the carb. even if it is not the problem it should be cleaned occasionally. I hope it is not the timing because it is fixed on the yamahas.

fixed??? really???? could it be a loose cam chain? why does it have that timing window on the left case cover then (flat black cap you can stick a flat head in)???? Thanks I'll try the carb

The choke closes off the air to make it run rich. So, its getting to much air or not enough fuel (NOT NONE, just not enough) OR the air/fuel screw needs to be adjusted OR wrong jets :?:

try taking the slide on the throttle cable apart because the spring could be warped up...Just got done fixing that on my trike.

Try checking your exhaust valve clearence. If it is to tight it may cause it to lose idle but still be drivable.Or you may want to inspect your valve seats.Just a hunch :?:

Hey guys, you have to remember that Yamaha's have Mikuni (good :-D ) Carbs. LOL Their choke only lets in more fuel, by opening up another port. It doesn't restrict airflow like a Kehein carb.

Pilot jet was clogged, good cleaning fixed it right up. Threw a new air filter, plug and oil change in for good measure. Thanks guys

Good to hear that everything worked out without any trouble. The cap on the left side is so that you can line up the cam when putting the top end on but you can't change the timeing like other bikes can.
