View Full Version : Where have all the 250r's gone?

I'm still kicking myself for not picking up a 3rd gen 250r that was locally on craigslist for a fair price. Looked unmolested too, just wasn't motivated enough to make a purchase at the time and figured I would find another one for a better deal. 2 years later, I rarely see them for sale anymore and when one does pop up, everyone wants $3,000 or more. I am in Ohio and was used to seeing them fairly often. Is this the case in your neck of the woods also? I was fortunate to grab a decent 350x rider for a good price but I would regret selling it and using the money towards a 250r. So if anyone knows of a decent 3rd gen 250r around Ohio, let me know. I don't mind traveling a little ways. Thanks!

There's a fixer in Pennsylvania east of Pittsburgh on CL for 1600.00

I haven't seen too many pop up here in Texas either. I picked up a first gen 250R that I really like riding, but look daily to see what's out there. There is one, but like you said, it's pretty pricey.

Dried up in Kentucky/Indiana as far as CL and classified ads go.

The market for trike stuff on Facegook has exploded from what I hear though I don't do FB so it's a second-hand opinion from friends. That and the fact that CL might be losing readers because of all the scams. It's hard to say what's going on but trikes are now more popular and in-demand than previous and there is a finite amount left like any other vintage machinery. The truth is it's probably a combination of all those things.

I'm outside of St. Louis. The prices are crazy here as well. I'm glad I picked up a nice one years ago or I doubt I'd be getting one at all.

If I still lived outside of Phoenix, I would have scooped up quite a few trikes and brought them back home to ohio to resell. Saw a lot of sales that were very reasonable and plentiful to boot. I didn’t realize how territorial these were when it came to availability/price once I started paying close attention the last couple years.

Very hard to find in southern Indiana. Best chance anymore is just having good luck by word of mouth that you are in the market. I check craigslist daily and rarely find one for a reasonable price or drive. I agree w/ Ironchop, a lot of the market is shifting towards FB. I still have yet to find a deal on there, but still see quite a few ATC's on there.

There some decent price 250rs out in the western states. 900-1600. I don't know how much shipping would be.It seems the trx 250rs are coming down in price.while the 81-84 250rs are going up.https://palmsprings.craigslist.org/snw/d/1986-honda-250r/6399472702.html https://portland.craigslist.org/clc/snw/d/honda-trx250r-trx-250r-trx250/6408951539.html

Gotta agree with everyone here. I got back into 3 wheeling around 97' and purchased a 86' rider for $750 in good shape, everything there....almost killed myself on the test ride though; it had been since 1989 since I've been on a 3 wheeler and it was my very nice 84' 200M......Big difference between the two bikes......LOL. Got stationed in Arizona at Luke AFB in the early 2000's. Bought my second 86' 250R; this time a mint one with new maier plastics for $1800, some of the lesser one's were still going then for $750. Anyway contacted the orginal owner since it was on consignment and he gave me the original fenders and headlight! WOW, that'll never happen again. I wish I had bought at least 10 of them then. Was wondering when the price was going to jump on them compared to the 3rd gen Tecate's. Now the 3rd gen Honda 250R's demand the most money, glad I scooped up 2 of them when the price was good.

Persistence pays off. I was lucky to have been at the right place right time when I got 2 separate deals on a 350x. Just gotta keep looking, twice a day is what it costs b/c as you all know how fast these fly off the shelves when a deal strikes. If I ever pick one up i'll be sure to post it, seeing how hard they are to come by for a good price of here. Might be a 5 year old bumped thread.

You could always build one from scratch from ebay. One piece at a time.

That would actually be pretty damn cool, and would be a nice accomplishment in the end.

And just think how cool it would be to have someone ask: "where did you get that nice looking 250R (or Tecate etc.)??

You could be like:

"TX, CA, NY, MO, NJ, SC, MT, KY"

:)

And would cost more than just buying a complete roller.

They've all been clapped out and beaten to a pulp by people that don't treat them proper. I know here in AZ there were a couple guys buying up everyone of them on craigslist and parting them out on ebay. 100 or so gone now...perfectly good running bikes too. Engines sure would last longer if people would quit running 50:1 oil, inspect their chain slack (so they don't keep throwing chains and busting cases), and use properly oiled foam filters...no K/N junk.

At first it was nice finding clean parts to build mine, then the prices just got stupid as if there was a chunk of hidden gold in their parts. I wonder what the next bike will be out there that will suffer the same fate as the trx and atc 250r?

No guess what this may be worth? It may be more trouble than its worth, especially without even hearing the motor run. Problem is, its slim pickens out here.

My brother has had this for sale all year up in Medina County. It has been powdered and built from the ground up light portwork. The jetting is a little off but it runs good, he was gonna just put a PWK 38 on it at some point..Him and I have had some nice Rs on CL..I quit listing there and just word of mouth it.
After awhile you get tired of the trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro jealousy emails wish warriors that " can build a better one for 1500 bucks " and " will u trade a nintendo, 2 goats and a warm busch light and 100 bucks for it "

Man, I said it before and i'll say it again. Somebody with a 18 wheeler should go to cali and buy a load of atc250r and trx250r's where they are COMMON and CHEAP! Bring them to the east coast and they would sell double price, because they are rare and have no rust.

I hate selling things the last few years. Everyone is such cheap dicks that they start the low-balling at 10% asking price.

I never could understand why some of these sphincters think they can insult you into a better deal. I've thrown people off my property five minutes after they arrived. The last guy complained he drove 4hrs to look at my sister's Bronco but he tried shady dick head stuff with her because she's a woman so I came outside and he got tossed with extreme prejudice. 8hrs is a long drive to get nothing because you're a punk.

Right on.
I am all for bargaining, you have to. But to just straight up insult the seller is idiotic. And there is also the " time wasters" 47 texts for nothing.
You just wanna shoe em the nutz.

I will prob just make an offer on the parts lot. Its going to be a pain selling everything off to reinvest into 1 complete trike but I don't see these becoming any easier to find. Not to mention being at the right place at the right time cuz you know how quick these sell. Anyone out there with one, certainly don't sell it. I regretted selling my 350x a while back and needed to get another. Lucked out on picking another up and its staying put unless I find a nicer one.

BOB MARLIN
12-30-2017, 09:07 AM
The parts in that add are all in rough shape. But it looks like there might be enough to get that roller put back together. The parts will take a lot of cleaning up to sell but I think you could recoup a lot of the money you spent on them or maybe even more, hopefully the frames have titles of some sort, they are worth a lot more that way. That engine looks like it might be out of quad (long rod). Can't really tell if it has a spacer or just a thick gasket on it. It really doesn't matter, just something to investigate.

Spencer2986
12-31-2017, 10:45 AM
Thank you for the reply and information. I was going to inquire about the engine but wasn't sure if you could tell a difference looking at it besides from the serial number.

Mosh
12-31-2017, 11:28 AM
That stuff is rough. Seriously it is worth maybe 1200 -1500 bucks. Other than some wheels and maybe a seat or 2 there is not much there IMO that could recoup maybe 400-600. The case is busted up on the engine and typically running engines are in a frame and not missing bolts. Even if you paid 1500, sold 600 worth of extras, you are going to have to pump another 2000 grand plus your time to build a nice trike.
Just 3- 5 years ago we were loading up parts piles like that for 500 bucks. IMO if it was me and I was desperate for one I would not pay more than 1500 at current prices. The seat on the roller may bring 200 or so, the other 2 seats, one pan is warped pretty bad, and the foam is wasted on the other or you could sell them for decent money also. Judging by the pics, which are not great, in my experience you dealing with a pile of bent and pitted forks, a twisted sub frame on the roller, 2 other frames that look rusty enough to be rotted out on the bottom sides, and I would guess 50% of the stuff is going to be siezed, stripped etc. I am not saying it is not worth it but you got to be careful. I have picked up many lots like that and by time I got deep into the pile 50% of it was not useable or worth saving.

Spencer2986
12-31-2017, 11:57 AM
Fantastic Reply!!! Appreciate your time and opinion. I honestly wasn't going to want to pay more than $1200. There is a lot of work that needs done but was hoping for the best on recovery funds with the parts. These don't show up often out here or else I wouldn't even consider this. Thanks again!
