Your guys' opinion on which bike is faster: 250R or 350X

Sorry if this has already been asked a few times, but I have to ask a probably somewhat obvious question:

In your guys' opinion (which I have come to have a lot of respect for), which is the faster DRAG RACING bike:

The Honda 250R or the Honda 350X ATC?

I'm thinking 250R hands down. And in every youtube video the 250R smokes the 350X. However, youtube is also full of a LOT of idiots.

Some day I will own BOTH bikes, but I am just curious.

Yes stock for stock, on pavement, and with both riders of equal skill level (at least for drag racing), and the same weight.

You know, the kind of drag racing where it is ALL about the bike, not the skill or weight of the riders, or the traction of the bike.

yep that's my old 85. Sold it 2 years ago.

350X against the 1985-1987 liquid cooled 250Rs, is really no contest.
The 350X compares a lot more favorably against first and second generation (81-84) air cooled Rs.
Not saying the 350X is as fast as an air fooler, but it won't get smoked like with the water pumpers.

This is based on watching a dozen years of drag racing at TrikeFest..... not that there are very many truly stock trikes anymore.
Most competitors at least have an aftermarket pipe.

BUT... I am super OCD about my actual machines, and wash them as soon as they get any dirt etc. on them.

I own every year Tecate and each generation of the R, and can tell you the Tecate will out accelerate the R in stock form. If you read the comparisons from back in the day they will tell you the same thing. The Tecate--especially the 84/85--has a big hit and leaves you hanging on for dear life. The R has a more mild and smooth power delivery. The Tecate doesn't have a counterbalancer--nor does the Tri-Z--which gives them a more untamed feeling. As far as top speed I'd say the R might have a bit of an edge. It's got a 6 speed and it's a tall 6th, and the Tecate only has 5. These comments don't apply to modified machines. In fact, I was riding my modified 86 R just a few hours ago and thinking it will hang with my modified Tecates.

The porting layout of a stock Tecate is a big reason why its faster than a 250r. Kawasaki did some weird stuff back in the day though. It took them awhile to figure out where the headlight should be. Where the radiator should be, and did they ever figure out how to make it kick forward ?

Yeah, I read on another website that the port layout on the Tecates was cutting edge for its day. CPI industries, which makes bad ass aftermarket cylinders for the TRX 250R (and Banshees), has a similar layout. Their Sphynx cylinder for the R makes some serious hp. That's going to be my next Honda build.

Like I said, I am a HUGE fan of the Kawasaki dirtbikes, especially after owning a KX250 and a KX500.

When it comes to quads, I am a big Yamaha fan.

And since Yamaha never made an actual GOOD racing ATC....

Also, my favorite color is green. And I'm not trying to be funny here; my favorite color (in general) actually IS green :)

ummmm...if you are more concerned about the location of the radiator than you are about easily smoking a honda then you really should buy a honda, cuz unless you are on Forbes list of the top 500 wealthiest people in the world, you might not be able to afford the truly ultimate 3 wheeler, The 1986 TECATE (With Side Mount Radiators)...The Most Powerful And By Far The Best Handling Production 3 Wheeler In The World!

Real race bikes don't use headlights which is why we made ours easily removable. All you have to do is simply sit back, then grab a handful of throttle and the headlight will come right off when the bike flips over on top of you. :lol:

We also made it easily removable so when a TECATE rider goes riding with his honda friends in the dark he can take it off and shine it down by the CDI area on his buddies bikes so they can see well enough to install the spare one they need to have with them to make a long 5 mile ride.



Maybe barnett468 can tell us who came up with the name "Tecate"? I know it suppose to be named after "a tough little border town in Baja where the off-road races would break a Sherman tank."

We had a bike naming contest for everyone in the building and the winner got $100.00 or something like that and one of the guys in another department came up with the name because it was both the name of a beer and a desert town in baja.

We had the same contest for the Bayou where we actually went to test the Bayou.

I could be mistaken (or just color blind) but I'm pretty sure that is a Green TECATE in FRONT of everyone else at a Mickey Thompson race in Pomona.

1. It's all in good fun, but some people don't seem to have much of a sense of humor, which I actually find humorous. In my opinion (which is irrelevant), anyone that takes themselves too seriously about the amazing feats they achieved racing a motorized children's toy, needs therapy.

2. I do not own a KX500, however, I have tested them in around 1985.

3. It depends upon what you mean by the "fastest", but irregardless, not having ridden any of the competitors bikes of the same year or a 2002 like yours etc, I couldn't possibly say. What I can definitely say is that I was a pro motocross rider until around 1982 and had raced in the open class as well as the 125 and 250 class, and I even had the blazing fast FMF National bike they built for their open class rider which I got from them after he broke his shoulder, so I was used to pretty fast bikes, however, none of them were even remotely on the same scale as the Kawi 500 I tested, and in fact, it was really too much bike for me and felt like it was going to pull my arms out of their sockets, lol.

The hill at Glamis is NOT a professional track race, but congratulations on being able to beat somebody in a straight line. :rolleyes:

When and where were these trans cal golden state national 3 wheeler races?

As far as I remember, no one at Team Green ever raced a district 37 3 wheeler race, so who of any notability did you actually beat at those that didn't break down?

I raced at Corona on a motorcycle and later on a 3 wheeler and at Ascot on a motorcycle on the MX track where I beat Gary Jones and also raced a quad there, so when did you race there?

I also know Roger Agajanian because he used to date my sister but that's not really relevant, just more of a bit of trivia.

Tecates are fast, Tri-Z's are fast, 250r's are fast. They all have different personalities and any of them should be faster than a 350x in acceleration and top speed. 350x is no slouch though. There wasn't a thumper out there that could give it half a race until the 400ex came out in '98.

I enjoyed the privilege of taking some laps around Raffas ice track one of the last years Ice Fest happened on one of MIK6's Sprock Tecate 300. Awesome fun! Different than the R's that I'm much more accustomed to?? Yep. But I'm sure I could get quite comfy on a Mean Green with more seat time. The only thing that has kept me from doing a Tecate is they and their parts just are not as common and easy to source, well, that, and I am just plain out of room to store more trikes till I get a barn built. I think they are a fine machine.

Disclaimer: I am NOT nor have I EVER been a racer. Just like to ride and make sweet smelling blue smoke to piss off the hippies. :D

No, there really is NOT any good riding at all in Vermont, which is one reason why I hate it here.

Everywhere is way too rocky, way too muddy, way too cold, and did I mention there is hardly anywhere to even ride at all? (and if by some miracle you DO find a place to ride, you have to deal with all that I just mentioned.)

And on top of that, you can't even START UP an ATC/Quad/Dirt Bike in Vermont without pissing someone off. And I wish I was kidding about that.

The only thing that you can do around here is snowmobile, and even that sucks, because:

A. You are lucky if you get a decent winter for snowmobiling in VT.
B. The trails in Vermont suck, even with snow on them
C. I HATE snowmobiles (I guess that probably doesn't apply to everyone else though :)

So you guys wanna have a trikefest in VT sometime? O wait, you can't, because the whole state would throw a fit about it (that, and you would have no place to ride anyways :)

I had heard that they were very ATV unfriendly. Sucks. The reason that New Hampshire has such great riding is that the state embraces it and they've made it about commerce. It pours money into the state. I guess Bernie don't ride. Too bad. It looks like there would be some great places.

Matt: Look into Lewis County over here in NY in the Tug Hill region. As long as your machine is registered in your home state, insured with basic liability (Progressive insures trikes) and you wear a helmet, there are many miles of seasonal gravel roads that are open to ATV use. You can also get a trail pass from the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce which opens up a ton more trails that you can use. These are not gravel roads, but actual trails. You can easily put on a 100 mile day in one big loop and not come close to seeing it all. http://www.lewiscountychamber.org/permits.php

I'm not sure where in VT you are located, but Tug Hill shouldn't be a crazy long drive for you.

Removing bearings, studs and dowels from crusty 30 year old cases. The rest of the weekend was spent accumulating all the hardware from a dozen different projects and sorting it all out. Major mess, but one of those things that needs doing everything few years. As usual it starts with looking for one part and turning the place upside down searching for it.

Had you made it to the higher class levels (like around 4th grade) they would have taught you that adding a y to the end of most words, like "douche" for example, to create the word "douchey", would have turned it into an adjective the way you used it in your sentence.
