View Full Version : I think I have made up my mind on building my 200x

Ok, I have asked a few questions on here about what engine to put in a 200X auto 200x and stuff. I have made up my mind now! It is set in stone. I took my 185 engine out of my 200x frame and put it back in my 185. I now am rebuilding my 200x stock engine. I ordered a 12.1 Wiseco piston that is .50mm over. Sense my engine was out of round.
Now what Cam should I get?
What is the best Cam to get?
What mikuni carb should I get?
What exhaust should I get?
I know there are a lot of you on here who have built 200x's. This is going to be my Ice racing and sand dune machine. I know these where not really a high performance machine, but what the heck.

Maybe ask Mickey Dunlap?

I’m gonna go with talk to Mickey. He has from mild to wild. Tell him your riding style and he’ll set you up with a proper kit. His parts are very reasonable in price. He’s swamped all the time though so if you want him to build it you better get on it.

the cam type really depends on your gearing and where you want the power. the higher it revs the more power it will make. if it revs high enough you should go to titanium retainers . ti springs and ti valves would also help but that's probably over kill for your app. you also need to have the right spring pressure both open and closed to eliminate valve bounce when closing or lofting at high rpms. you should also set the valve spring clearance to the optimum spec when the valve is fully open to reduce valve spring surge if you rev it high.
you also should improve the head flow. if you use the stock head you can get it ported.
heres one example of high perf valves .

web cams and mega cycle both have cams or you could get one custom made to fit your needs.
i would use hard welded rocker arms.
you could also get your cam, bearings, and piston coated with tungsten disulphide. you could also have this done to the trans or you could get it rem finished or both and it will shift noticeably smother.
a lightweight drive chain chain and aluminum rear sprocket will also help .
you will also likely need to modify your timing curve to get the optimum performance out if it with these mods.
did i mention oil?

you will also need to preload your clutch springs a little with washers if possible or get stiffer springs.

.
here's 2 good lightweight chain options but they will not last as long as a good heavy duty chain.

.
you might also consider running an mls head gasket.

Sorry about the late response. I looked at the camshafts and $160 is alot more then I was expecting. Then I looked at the pricing of the valves, springs, and having the rocker arms welded. I was a little overwhelmed. Then again if I'm going to do it I might as well do it the right way the first time.

Speed costs, how fast do you want to go?

Plan on running race gas if you are running 12:1. If you want it to run right, you need to get some head work done to get it flowing better. You are also going to need to hardweld your rockers to go with the bigger cam.

What hp is a stock 200x?. 11 or 12 ?
It's going to cost a lot of money to gain just a few more hp. Be prepaired.

I have a quick question guys. Is the xr 200 cam chain and guides the same as a 200x? I don't want to keep starting a new post every time I have a question so I'm going to try to ask them here. When I get the project rolling I'll add so pics. I'm still in the parts ordering part right now.
I'm starting to think I might just get a stock cam and just put an aftermarket exhaust on it and call it good. It is just a little 200 motor and I don't want to spend a lot of $$$$ on the engine I build for it. If I realy want to go that much faster I might as well buy a 250r or a 350x

It's not inexpensive but my 200 is pretty quick;Put a 150# rider on there and it boots.
I'm 210#s so I need everything I can get. I run NOS rocker arms, (in lieu of hard coating), great oil and change it often.
No wear to speak of as of now 2017...

You might consider buying this instead of building your 200x:

Ive build up a few.
The best power 4 stroker I did was 1:1 weisco piston, ported head, xr200 cam, xr200 carb cobra head pipe mated to a cut in half YZ400F muffler.
The best power 2 stroke I did was a KX112 with redomed head and porting with boysten power reeds and and reed spracer.
I liked the 1st one better but the 2nd one made way more power, just no torque.
Beware you spend spend $1500 into getting a 200x running right, you can spend that again getting one to handle right that does not sit 5 inches off the ground lol. If your larger then 5ft 6" and 150lbs buy a 350x

I got my parts in and I ended up using a stock cam. I couldn't justify spending alot of $$$ on a 200x camshaft. I have the engine mostly tore down. I hope to have the cylinder done this week. I also forgot to say the 200x was a complete basket case. I have a friend that as a ton of 200x parts thats why I picked this machine for a project vs a 250r or 350x. 248100

Middle of the road cam, 10.25:1, maybe exhaust and some carb work, and your flyin!!...
