View Full Version : 77 atc 90
Picked up this 90 for 200. Previous owner put points in it and gave up. I reset the gap to spec. Sounds close to taking off. When i was setting the points the i was turning the motor over and there was a scraping sound, like the flywheel scrapping the stator. Im guessing that is not good. Plug and wire looks new also. Its getting plenty of fuel.Going to ohm the stator next. Any insight would be appreciated.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170713/974c5f8cbf820bf4f782cf6d91c0c931.jpg

Do you know if the condenser was replaced with the points? You may want to check the felt and replace it if it's bad. Get rid of any old fuel & get fresh fuel.
The noise in the stator is probably a washer or bolt left over from the points replacement. You may want to add a fuel filter and clean your carb.
If the condensor is inside the frame then no, was gonna dig into that today. Theres fresh gas and i hosed out the carb with cleaner. May need a more thourgh cleaning.

Looks like a neat original bike. I'm digging the tire chains.
Yeah, had a handlebar mount gun scabbard as well

Well reset the points fixed the stator scrapping issue new condenser and still no spark. Ohmed the stator was in spec. The headlight comes on when u pull it but it is very dim, basically a faint orange glow.
You can hear the kill switch click, when you switch it on/off. Tried with only one black one the stator as that should cut out the kill switch correct?
Any suggestions? Weak stator? Bad coil?

Test voltage out put of the stator.
You can Ohm test the secondary and primary windings on the coil to see if its bad.
12.8 out of both stator coils, going to check the coil next.

Got another wiring harness and hooked it up and it started on the first pull. So now to get the old wire harness out. I tired tugging on both ends but it seems to catch on something.
Is there any way to snake it out or do you have to drop the engine out?

I yes it helps to drop the motor, to get the old out and new in.. don't toss that old harness, it's probably just a break in the wire somewhere.
If I remove the front and top mount would it pivot out of the way?

Ok so its running but when I tighten the points cover down it dies immediately. Any ideas?

Your cover is shorting out on your points
Thats what i was thinking, but how? What changed? Not the correct set of points? The cover seems to be original. If all the parts are correct how does one fix this?

what points did you put in? were they aftermarket or oem? there is a diffrence. post up a pic of the points without the cover on.
Points were in when i got it. I am wondering if this was the problem all along. :/https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180712/a6b72c018ea28c5adc6da40451e04081.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180712/e67de1584d54bb3d060a2068700bf75e.jpg

That would be it. I think what might be happening is that the connection there is what is shorting out on the cover. I also believe that those points are aftermarket, we've had issues with aftermarket points mounted to a stock plate before.
Well back to no spark, sat for 5 days nothing changed. This thing is testing my patience for sure.

Keep worth it you'll get it figured out. If those points are stamped TEC that is aftermarket, I would suggest OEM points if that's the case
No stamp, but the dimpled frame doesnt seem to match the pics of the OEM ones ive seen. Regardless removing them for inspection forced me to reset them and i moved the wire in alil on its stud then bent it away from the frame alil. After i reset and gapped them, got the best spark yet! Started first pull!! Tightened the cover down still starts!!
Next going to check valves and figure out why it falls on its face when you hit the throttle.

That's what caught my eye were those dimples. Valves, carb, timing chain.

Lbox,
Have you pulled your carb and cleaned it? Whats the air filter look like? Make sure everything is right with that carb and you may want to throw on a couple of inline filters. Being that the trike idles I would check the main jet. Does the throttle lever move freely? Does it have a stock exhaust on it? It does sound like it has some top end noise going on either timing chain or valves, check and adjust as needed.

Yes, its rotted out at the muffler.
