There should also be a copper ring the pipe presses against inside the exhaust port.

You can use partzilla or just look at the service manual online for free to look up parts. %)

Heres one for the 86 Tecate, notice Barnett used 2 o rings on the newer models.

In addition to the copper ring I also use a heavy dose of high temp red silicone and wipe off the excess after the springs are in place.

Look it beats the tri Z design. That is fitted with a "crush" spacer, which as the name suggests, crushes over time and the exhaust system starts to eat into the cylinder housing. Easy to replace, but I suspect very few had been replaced in their day, which has meant the near destruction of many fine Yamaha cylinders

The copper ring isn't really there to seal the exhaust so much as keep the pipe from wearing into the aluminum. If you find the oily black splatter annoying here is what you do. Contact Greg at Off Road Innovations and buy one of his oversized O-rings. OEM rings are too small in diameter. I bought some from him for my various Tecates they are amazing--no leaks at all. No more oily frame, motor, hoses, etc. You don't need sealant and they are only like 4 or 6 bucks each--I can't remember exactly. He specializes in the Tecates. Here is his website.

Ok got them on order!
Next question
So I'm completely redoing most everything on it what's the best way to rebuild a shock? I'd much rather do it myself then pay FCR or someone to do it. It's gonna need all new inards where can I get them? Moosing racing and All Balls both have a new seal head they say fits the T3. Anyone ever use one before? And do I need anything else other then the seal head?

I don't know how to rebuild shocks but I do know that banshee shocks fit & work on the 85 T3. Here's a pic of mine from years ago. I still have the shock if your interested.... come to think of it I have a nice 85 Tecate shock laying around too, its in the classifieds.

I've rebuilt my Tecate shocks several times. You will want to replace the seal head--All Balls is a good (and perhaps only) option. Your bump stop is probably gone or dry rotted by now. Greg at Off Road also sells a correct OEM-looking replacement for the bump stop. Lastly you'll need shock oil. If memory serves the manual recommends 10 wt. but I've used heavier to slow rebound damping. If you put a lot of preload on your spring (which you generally do if you weigh more), you might try 15 wt. After you rebuild it you will also need someone to recharge the nitrogen. Here you can do a range of pressures, 172 to 225 psi if I remember. The higher the pressure the more firm the shock is going to feel. It will be less responsive to small bumps but better for jumping.
To remove the shim stack to replace the seal head and bumper, you are going to have to remove the threaded nut at the end of the shock shaft. This nut is machined at the factory to stay put and usually removes the 1st thread on the shaft when you go to remove it. Just clean up the end with a file once you get the nut off. When removing the shim stack, you will want to use a zip tie to keep the shims in the proper order, otherwise you'll be guessing when you go to put it back on. Use some red thread lock on the nut after you've reassembled the shaft. You don't want your shock coming apart mid flight.
Finally, refilling the shock with oil is an unavoidably messy process. I do it over a pie pan to catch the oil. You want to be sure to get ALL the air out of the shock, the reservoir, and hose, otherwise it will hurt the performance of your shock.

Do you have the collar that fits over the snout? I didn't even know I was missing it until I read about them on here. A member on here that goes by Muthey makes them. Mine hasn't leaked a drop of oil since I installed it. It is a must have part for the Yamaha unless you get the snout machined to take an o-ring.

x2 - I keep a tube in my travel tool box just for this

I rebuilt one a couple of years ago. Tough part was finding a shop locally to properly charge the nitrogen.
In the end, it did not work right. I believe I screwed up something in the shim stack while I had it apart - so keep an eye on that.
It did not leak, but the damping sucked.
I will not do it again. Last Banshee shock I bought was $25. Hard to beat.

Yeah replacing with a Banshee or 300EX shock is way easier, probably cheaper, and definitely an upgrade.

I'd go for a 01 raptor 660 shock and use the rezzie hose off of your tecate shock. Love it on mine works like a dream.

If you rebuild your shock use a oem Honda xr200 seal head 84-02. Its cheaper and better quality than the all balls.
