Hey guys, I bought my first 3 wheeler last year
, an 85 ATC110. It was in pieces when I bought it and it took me a long time to track down all the parts I needed to get it running but I finally did.
Last night I purchased this 70 and another 70 frame with a box of parts. I am super excited to start working on getting one going but I fear this is a candidate for a motor swap because the trans seems to be stuck in gear. The shifter moves up and down but I cant find neutral. I am considering selling the 110 to fund an aftermarket motor, or I may try to put the 110 motor in this 70 frame.
Regardless, I am going to try to look at them closer this weekend and see what I have to work with.

fix the tranny on the 70,there easy to work on
They are? Well I have two bottom ends in the tub of parts so maybe i can find enough parts to make one work. Is there a thread on here of a trans disassembly and assembly? Also, is there any way to tell which year bottom ends I have?

Banchee...I rarely post. I am more of a lurker as I got my first shee last fall and have been building on it since. You guys keep it entertaining over there...LOL

They both look like real solid trikes for whatever you decide to do with. The little suckers are addicting though. and there is tons of companies out there that make aftermarket parts. So the possibilities are endless with how you build it. Mine is almost more fun to ride than a 250r or 200x.
What kind of motor do you have in yours?

I put a piranha 140cc pit bike engine. No frame mods, you just have to drop the front fender down a set of holes. Its got power for days and is a 4 speed with a manual clutch. its fun but almost two fast for buzzing around, my next one will have a 110 or 125 semi auto motor in it.
I sourced most of my parts from Gordon Spangler at www.Hondaatc70.com Great guy to deal with and will help you through just about anything, hes also on facebook to chat about pullstart conversions and anything else you might need. And then I had custom stickers made by PeeWee Gonzalez.

Great start to a couple of projects. They are one of funnest ATC's to ride as an adult. It appears the first 70 in the pic has the regular "bent frame" syndrome where the front fender will rub on the cylinder head. It's very easy to fix, BTW.

It might be your forks that are bent. You should have more than enough clearance between the head and the front fender.

Not to get too far off topic here, but in general, could I get an 84-85 125m motor to work in one of these frames about as easily as a 110 motor, with the majority of the work just being the motor mounts, head clearance with the fender, chain size and finding somewhere for the battery?

Interesting, it does look straight. The usual spot for the bend is right at the steering neck; maybe it's the picture? How close does your fender get to the motor nuts when turning? There should be about a 1/2" of free clearance.

I'm not to familiar with the 125m and 110 motors but if your already going to be cutting new mounts then it shouldn't be two bad. If you want to go with a honda motor, you could always go with a big bore kit on the stock 70 motor. They make up to a 108 stroker I believe and I have heard they really move
The fender rubs the cylinder head when i turn the forks.

If the fender is mounted correctly then something definitely isn't right. It looks to me like the forks are bent in the last picture you posted.
The forks dont look bent either.

I found a pull start in the tub of parts along with the carb and flywheel.

Chances are it is your neck. There is a thread on here about straightening them out with a bottle jack. Just be careful not to go too far.

This frame was bent. It turned out ok.
If everything looks straight to my eyes then how do I know how far to bend the frame? Surely Im not supposed to base it on just the distance between the fender and engine?

The top tube should be straight. Put a true edge on the backbone. It should lay flat if not it's bent. Adjust accordingly.

Having a pull start is a plus! As Evan said, something is not right as I can see marks on the front fender. Get out a straightedge and check the backbone and the forks to make sure.

This AM I pulled the side cover to try to see why the trans is not shifting. I do not know what I am looking for but I can see this shift arm moving forward and back when I try to shift but the arm does not turn the star thing. Is that the problem?

Found the problem. Unfortunately the broken piece is missing in the bottom end and i cant hear it when i stand the bike up and shake it. What should i do?

Can I use red rtv instead of the paper gasket when I put the right side case back on?

I am going to try to get this 70 motor running this week but I ran into a speed bump. The pull start assembly is not complete. Does anyone know if the coil, wire clips, and grabber things off a 110 will work in this housing?

When I was younger we had a beat up 110 that my dad sold. The guy came to pick it up with a chevy celebrity. Did the same thing, rear end in the trunk and tied it down. Lol
I finally got the 125m motor running and shifting. I pulled it out of the frame today. Here it is next to a 70 motor which is ready to go except for a couple recoil parts I am waiting to arrive. I am not sure the 70 frame will allow me the space to use the battery and e-start off the 125 motor but I am going to try.

I bought a new rear sprocket and am having a hell of a time getting the old one off. I finally got both hubs after using a torch and sledge hammer but I dont see the axle nuts, or any way to get the sprocket off. Can someone tell me what I need to do?

The rear axle is sleeved and the hubs are what keep the axle tight .
Thanks! So if I remove the sprocket bolts I should be able to get it, the cover and cushions off?

Their are no sprocket bolts . Remove the axle sleeves and the sprocket slides off .!
Oh geeze. So once I hit the left sleeve with a torch what the heck am I supposed to hit with a hammer to get that sleeve off?

Hit the axle but use a chunk of wood so you don't damage the axle threads
Lickily the axle sleeve came off without having to use heat or a hammer.
I put a straight edge on the frame and do not see a bend despite the marks on the front fender from rubbing the motor.

Ive got the motor temporarily in the 70 frame. It looks like the only real issue is that the carb will hit the gas tank when the cap is on.
I see two possible fixes: 1- I cut a section out of the manifold to make it shorter. I dont like this because that will put the carb very close to the cylinder where it will be hot. 2- i cut the manifold and twist it judt enough so the carb will clear the inside of the tank. I am leaning towards that option. If I cut out a very short piece of manufold then I will not have to twist it much and the carb will still be away from the cylinder.

If you tilt the carb, the float may not work right. Seems like it would cause problems being tilted to one side, it may not fill properly?

A little heat and a ball peen hammer would massage that tank to fit your needs :lol::naughty:
I cut a section out of the manifold exactly 1" long. I twisted the back section of the manifold slightly so that the carb cap will clear the tank. The manifold is of course cast aluminum so it all has to be done carefully (pre heated and controlled cooling after welding)

It looks like im going to have to run a head stay due to how thin the atc70 frame is at the rear mounts. I am going to modify the stock 125m head stay and weld it to the 70 frame.

I just cut a corner off the factory 125 mount and made an extension out of it.

Next on the list is to fit the exhaust. I am going to use the stock 125 exhaust and it will run right above the axle and between the brake drum cover and tire.

Can anyone tell me if the rear fenders sit directly on the metal mounting bracket or is there a piece of rubber that goes between the fenders and the frame?
Another question, with this 70 motor, is this woodruff key too low? It does not look like much of it will catch the flywheel.

I think the 70 fenders sit right on the frame, I done recall seeing any rubber pads on mine when I took it off the other day.

Yeah man, that woodruff key looks too low. I can't see how that would grip the stator keyway. Maybe you could machine a taller one?
The electric start works. I need to clean the needle in the carb again because its leaking out of the overflow. Other than that she is ready to test ride.

Very cool, nice work!
I just took it for a test ride. As soon as I put it in gear it started leaking a LOT of oil where the front sprocket shaft goes into the high-lo range box. Is there just a seal there or is it likely I have bigger problems? It does not leak when it is idling in neutral

I am curious about this project. What did you find was the transmission problem when you were unable to shift gears? I ask as I have a similar issue with my TRC70 project.
