I got my R completely tore down last night. I am powdering frame etc... and replacing all bearings. After removing the swinger and having the needle bearings fall apart after a few taps. I can not tell if there is stops or it is just stuck pieces of the bearings outer race stuck in the swing arm. I can't tell if I should be trying to get these out or if it is made like that

237114Each side of that swingarm will have a bearing and a collar. They will also have a bushing on each end of both sides.
Getting all that krap out is an even bigger PITA than getting your pivot bolt out. I suggest soaking it on Kroil then using (lots of) heat and the biggest BFH that you have.

My swingarm pivot bolt actually came right out. I've heard of people having to cut them out... I finnaly got the bearings out with about 4 hours of work and some help from a BFH and heat as you suggested. I got a pivot works set on the way for it.

the best way to get the bearings out would be a socket that just fits in the swingarm, I believe a 19mm regular wall and short extension on it, they put the swing arm in a vice and put a big impact socket on the other end, big enough that the bearing and socket will partially pass through and turn the vice, it should press out. When it bottoms out, remove it from vice and give the socket/extension a few wacks. Or use the same socket, get a piece of threaded rod and nuts, some thick washers and do the same. Only difference tightening the nuts on threaded rod verses turning vice. Re-install bearing the same way.

Yes, what deathman said. The bearings need to be pressed in to install & pressed out to remove. Hammering them in or out will destroy them. I'm a big fan of the threaded rod method.

i tried using our 30ton shop press but couldn't get a way to set it up with the angles of the swing arm it just slid. I will drop the new ones in the freezer and try to use the treaded rod method to get the new ones in than. I found my craftsman 3/4inch socket to be just the right size. I did get the old ones out as I said with no damage to swingarm.
