What does the little metal piece that goes on the top of a spark plug do?The piece I am talking about can be taken off and is a steel/grey colour.Because when i bought my trike it didnt have one on the spark plug and I am wondering if i should put one on because I am thinking it might be one of the reasons why it wouldn't run right.

I am not 100% but I think my 200x does not use that little piece you are talking about. I just throw them away.

You don't need it. Its for a larger electrode conection, like a briggs uses.

try a plug with it on. Your plug boot might need it.

It depends on your spark plug boot. The way to tell if you need try removing the piece you are talking about from the plug and slip the boot on. If it feels like it is snapping in place all the way done you do not need the adapter. If you put the spark plug boot on and it feels very loose you will need the adapter on the plug.
Hope this helps you out and good luck.

Just look into the stupid boot! It will be obvious whether your boot needs one or not.

Poor guy. Ok, look in boot, if the metal piece looks to have threads, throw it away. Although, if it looks to be smooth, keep it. Like someone said, listen for a snap sound after the boot goes on, thats how you will know its on right

It serves no function other than a physical fit and are there because plugs are not machine specific.

Its only purpose is to make the plug wire stay on the plug. Some plug ends are design for plugs with the piece removed(i.e. 83-85 200X). some are designed to require ir be on the plug(i.e. 81-84 250R).
It has no other magic purpose.

If that screw-on thingy on top of the plug is loose, or you take it off, won't all of the magic fire leak out of the spark plug?

The eye rolling doesn't get you a better answer! Its just an adapter to adapt to the boot, nothing more. Should we roll our eyes for you not knowing :?:

I was not putting the rolling eyes up to get an answer but for the people that miss read my post and thought it was a dumb question to ask and thought I wanted to know if my boot was loose or not,my question has already been answered so there is not need to go on about it...

whoa, lots of people with snappy replies, the peice your refering to is what i call a Top Hat, it only carries the "magic fire" through the spark plug, it also secures the spark plug boot so it dont go flyin off when your goin down a abandoned road at 50 mile an hour lol
