Ok I think I have figured out my problem but I figured I would post about it to see if anybody has some feed back. Last year my 85 250es started frying batteries, dead shorting them, would not even take a charge. At first I chalked it up to using a cheap battery. So I ran with out one for a couple of months with no problems. Finally I broke down and got a new battery from the local Honda dealer :( that hurt. I installed the new battery and life was good for about a month. It happened again fried the battery  I brought the battery back to the dealer and was able to exchange it :D so before I installed the new battery I started troubleshooting to see if I could find the cause. Since the only time it does it is when I go to start the trike it has to be something in that system so I started with the starting solenoid and with no luck It claimed another battery  I heard that the rectifier could case this problem. Though I did not think this the problem because with no battery everything worked fine, but I swapped with a good one from another machine. Same results  so the only other option I can think of is the starter itself. I am currently waiting on the new starter I ordered and we shall see what happens.

Good luck. Keep us posted on the results. I have experienced the same problem, but have had no luck resolving it.

Sounds to me like your voltage regulator is not doing its job. Try testing the voltage output while running. Anything over 14.4 volts is too much. Rev it while testing

Ok so for an update it was indeed the starter when I removed it and tested it it would work only some times and finally started smoking. I put a new starter in and so far so good. I have been good now for a couple of months so this problem is solved :)
