I check the part swaps page and didn't see anything related to it. So I'm wondering if the coil from a 1986-7 will work on the 1984. The coil that goes to the spark plug. If any body can link me to the right one that would be great. Thanks

They are not the same coil and not the same part number and they produce slightly different output voltages . Although coils from different models can often be interchanged, it is still preferable to use the correct coil for your particular year, especially if you have to buy one anyway . Also, the ohm readings are different between the first and second generation Tecate coils, so you need to compare the right coil with the right ohm reading if you test them . These specs can be found in section 14 of the pdf of the original service manual in the link below.

If you don't have a coil at all, they can often be found on Ebay, and you can also send a pm to member nd4speed and ask him if he has one . He occasionally has some KXT parts for sale.

The correct part number for 84 and 85 coil is 21121-1126 . Below is an entire page full of orig 84 thru 87 coils including a brand new one . Some of them are Chinese, and even though some of the Chinese parts are decent, I would stick with origal parts in this particular case.

Well apparently, as long as you have a decent supply of flywheels, the other maintenance is quite low, so as long as one can survive the initial sticker shock, the long term cost isn't all that bad!
