ATC200M Clutch Rebuild Questions

Hi, I need to rebuild the clutch on my 200M. It slips at take off an in higher gears. That mean the centrifugal clutch shoes and the friction discs will have to be replaced, right? Are the plates and shoes from G H Discount ATV good quality? Also, does it matter if there are any grooves in the centrifugal clutch drum, or should I repair that? Is there anything else I should keep an eye out for or replace while I am in there?

Are you taking off in high gears? If so that would cause slipping

Which number on the schematic pictured has grooves?

The good news is that you can still get most of the parts from service Honda.

As far as G&H discount goes.

They are pretty straight up over there. You may choose to call them up and ask them why you should buy there product vs. OEM.

They may have a supplier in Japan that makes the same quality parts for much less $$$ ???

200m's are awesome.

If you're going in there, I'd replace both. Technically, it could be either or, but just replace them both and be done with it.

I've never used their parts specifically, but rebuilding with fresh parts should be an improvement regardless.

Short of buying a NOS one, or finding one on e-bay that has less grooves, I don't think there is anything you can do to repair the centrifugal drum. Resurfacing it (if you could find somebody to do that) would increase the overall diameter and would not allow the centrifugal to work right. Is there any way you can measure the depth of the grooves or take a good picture? I've rebuilt mine, which had some grooves and had decent results. However, the grooves are taking away the surface area for the shoes to grab, so you may be more prone to slippage.

Yes. The hub that the centrifugal shoes attach to via the chain links can become worn. The holes in the hub that accept the pin for the chain link connector can become ovaled. If they are, the clutch shoes will engage to easily and the machine will creep forward at idle.

Coat all parts in the same engine oil you'll use in the motor. Follow the manual. Post here with any more questions.

AK47: Nope, take off in 1st or second gear only.

Arlaunch: Yes, I have downloaded the shop manual from Oscar Mayer. I had heard that the centrifugal clutch drum can get grooves in it when it slips. I think you have the diagram for the friction disc clutch pack.

The 200M's are great. Thanks for the help.

A little grooving is fine, as long as the shoes aren't worn a lot I would leave them. I've had a few 200's with slipping clutches, the clutch plates still measured up within spec, but were glazed over bad. Gave them a light scuff with sandpaper, and put a small copper washer under each clutch spring to tighten them up, and it worked perfectly, and never slipped again.
Now new clutch plates and springs are the best option, but I gave my 185 that treatment, and it's had a lot of hard miles since then with no slipping.
