View Full Version : Hand made two stroke pipe look?

I have fmf systems on my 85r and my other less important two strokes. I was just curious if there was any way to make a fmf pipe look like a hand made pipe similar to this one BDT makes for more $ than I'm willing to spend.

(The motor for those that remember my struggles is getting broke down tomorrow, I'm working on it with my local mechanic who does almost all of my work. I picked his brain about it and he wanted to see it for himself. I'll post back on its thread if I find anything out. (I did manage second in two stroke C class at trikefest with old motor, swapped it back in about a hour and a half, ran like a charm))

Yep. Take a cutting wheel and grind grooves, not all the way through the pipe, at the desired spacing all the way around the pipe, then fill each groove with tig weld.

Don't mean to shoot down the idea or even the cool factor of it, because If I knew a way to do it, I'd do it to.
But simply, you will not get the results without either screwing up the pipe or spending so much of your time making it look good, it would have been cheaper (counting if you value your time as worth anything) to just buy the pipe.
That look is achieved through welding small pieces of pipe together, the heat from the weld changing the look of the metal, and grinding process.
Save up the mulah and buy a sweet looking pipe bud. [emoji481]

FMF's are in my experience always chrome plated. It could be faux finished to look like a sectional pipe but you would have to have the chrome stripped, then cut, weld then blue the pipe. By the time you are done with you may not like the results. You could find an old school one on EBAY or save up a few bucs, do some research on who makes them.........then do the leg work to get the best price......the interweb/mainframe is a very powerful tool.
Bills pipes are offering this on their new pipes. I think they're ejust running along it with a tight torch to make the heat marks

yeah I'm sure I would be better off to leave it alone, just an idea I had for some time so thought I would toss it on here to see if anyone had attempted it before. I'd probably be better to just save up and buy one that's actually built that way, save my fmf for a future R I may have.
Thanks for the quick replies, ride on

Nobody here is a fan of the idea. Apparently my sarcasm missed the target today. It would take all the work that it takes to have the real thing. Interesting question though! Nothin' wrong with asking.

I don't know it would be quite a bit of work to fabricate my own pipe, I think that would be that hard part don't you think, least in my opinion, everyone can have their opinions though

If you want the look, have the time, but don't have the cash, lay a bunch of beads around the pipe with a tig. It'll get you a similar look.
I made a homemade pipe out some sheet metal, a hammer, and an arc welder. There's a thread on it around here somewhere. I spent a weekend making my first pipe (This doesn't include all the math involved). First i made one of paper to check fitment and design of the cones. I then spent the rest of the week end cutting and welding and hammering.
It's hideous. It was fast lol
I've since bought a slip roller and a tig welder to make my own pipes. Pipe making is a very time consuming process. If you have the tools already, you can make a pipe for about $20. It'll take for ever. Mocking up the parts is very time consuming. If you make an out of frame pipe, that's much easier!
Some of the veteran members may remember my old ugly slag covered nasty ass pipe. I think I was 19 or 20 at the time.

But as noted by others, the FMF is chrome, so it will have to be de-chromed or it will very likely crack and lift. I completely agree that just biting the bullet and making or buying one would be the way to go. You can even build your own slip roll!

40 hrs of work to buy a pipe or 60+ into making your first abortion of an expansion chamber, you decide.

40 hrs of work to buy a pipe or 60+ into making your first abortion of an expansion chamber, you decide. It's not that simple logan. There's something called 'opportunity cost' involved here, not to mention the experience, satisfaction and pride that comes from doing things yourself. Most people work their day job to pay the bills, not everybody can sacrifice the $$ from a paycheck to buy parts for toys, but have the dilligence and willingness to spend time. That's how Hot Rodding was born.

I gave up on building my own pipe after I figured that id need to make at least two to get a decent one. And that's at least two weekends worth of time that would be better off spent on more important things.
And 40 hours worth of work total, not just 40 hours from one weeks paycheck. I have bills to pay too you know.

Your post above is out of context in relation to the first.
Some would rather spend 100 hours fabricating to end up with nothing useful but knowledge, than spend any time doing anything else. There are times when I need to weld and grind something so badly that I will make up a project that would never have existed otherwise. It's something called 'passion'.
In any event, goosfraba.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I know that feeling, reason I'm building my own suspension instead of buy something already finished or sourcing it out to someone who actually knows stuff about linkage ratios and whatnot. In any case going to all the work to make a pipe LOOK handmade is more trouble than it's worth IMO.
