I need to replace my ignition system in my 87 T3. What options do I have? Is it a good idea to switch to a KX ignition system? If so, what year?My stator/ flywheel and CDI are all toast. What should I install now?

Anyone know?
I have a KX ignition in my 87. I am not sure what year it is. I know Kawi used the same crank in the KX as they did in the T3. If you do a parts search for crank simularitys that will tell you what has the same keyway for the flywheel. After that you just need the complete KX ignition, flywheel, stator, and CDI.
Thata about all I can tell you. I know others have done the same research, they will post as they get to it LOL
GOOD LUCK

200x basket and Jeb have KX ignitions i think. The only thing is you cant run lights unless you get some kind of add-on. There is also the Ricky Stator option for around $200.
Actually I don't currently have a KX ignition. I did have one on an 85 KXT I had in the past. I do recommend the KX. If you want lights, you'll have to look at adding a lighting coil to the KX stator.

jeb...what year KX fits the 85 t3 and what is the benefits/drawbacks?

For sure 83/86. I'm not sure what year the one I had was. probably any of the 80's models. I've been told you should use the whole ignition. The KX system is more robust. you must use the stator and flywheel for sure. I've got a Tecate set up manual (JWR) that says to switch to the KX coil too.
You should see better throttle response from the KX ignition. and you can forget about magnets coming loose and stators going out. If my 86 KXT fails again, I will probably more than likely switch to a KX. Although, I had stators in the past rewound for $75 and magnets re-glued for $75 too. And Ricky Stator is offering a better value than stock on his replacement stators and flywheels.

Do you have to change the CDI also?

you have to change it all. it works great and no more stator problems.

Sorry to bring back an old post but can anyone help me out with what year kx ignitions will work in the 86 T3? I mean while the engines out of my T3 and its going through the resto I might as well replace this stuff so I wont have to worry about stator problems in the future.
