I recently purchased a new UNI air filter for my 85 200X to replace my stock air filter which had ripped. The UNI air filter mounts into the air box and is held on only by a hose clamp unlike the stock air filter which has the bracket to hold it on. The problem I am having is that it is sometimes difficult to keep the air filter on. When I tighten the hose clamp too much around the rubber part of the air filter, the air filter will just slide off. When I tighten it to where it will stay on without sliding off it is not on tight enough to stay on through rough riding. Is there a quick fix to this or anything I can rig up for it to stay on tight? The bracket from the stock air filter will not work with this air filter.

Mine did the same, make sure the part that touches the mounting bracket (Inside lip) of the filter is oil free (Clean with rubbing alcohol) and the lip of the mounting lip on the air box is oil free (Also clean with alcohol) then try again, it will grab a lot better, just make it snug, do not over tighten.

I made sure I cleaned off the filter oil but it still seemed to slide off when I tightened it. It stays on when I am riding around on flat ground, I just don't want to risk having it pop off when I'm out riding in the woods. Just looking for a way to mount it so I know that it will stay on for sure when I am riding on rough ground.

Put a ring of thin two-sided tape on the flange before tightening, it will add friction or you could poke a hole in the uni and use the factory cross bracket.

If you dont care for the air box you can always do a direct filter on the carb. I think you have to buy a filter with a smaller rubber mount

You need some airbox rings made. They slip into the grooves of the airbox so you can clamp the filter on tighter. PM Dirtcrasher. He was making them at one point. Maybe he will make you a set. His forum post concerning the rings is below.

I wanted to use the stock bracket to hold on the UNI filter but the screen inside of the stock air filter does not fit inside of the UNI filter. Instead of a screen the UNI filter has a spring like stabilizer inside leaving nothing to screw the bracket into. Has anyone found a way to mount the bracket onto one of these filters?

I will look into those air box rings. They look like they will work good and be reliable when riding on rough terrain.

On a 200X?

I never had issues with my 200x either. I ran a UNI with an outerwear and it was tight as can be. My 250R was a completely different story.

It just depends on the condition of the plastic in the airbox (if its still rigid or if it has become malleable over the years)

Having the same issue with my 84 200x, I'm a little late to the thread though lol.

I like my Ring made by member here, it plane works. It’s a trick little item that solves a 20yr+ air box issue from maintenance by former owners and worn plastic/rubber.
