Yamaha 225DX delivered to me for $200, not running. O.P. said "I cleaned the carb, now it won't start". The carb was not in good shape.

Nothing special on the revival just doing what needs done. Avoiding any restoration type work as much as possible. I did have to blast and paint the head pipe but otherwise just maintenance ans service. I had a lot of leftover parts from my other DX build that I was able to use on this one.

The bad:
Bent bars
Bent forks
Car tires, bald
Empty muffler, no clamp or gasket.
Dirtiest carb ever
Seized choke plunger
One bowl screw
Stuck float
Destroyed and buried mix screw
Shot rear axle bearings
Caked on oil on everything
Torn boots
Bald front tire
No axle nut on the front
Front axle destroyed by hammmer
Improperly installed front brake hub
Tight valves
Blown rear shock
No airbox cage, element, lid
No battery
Oxidation and broken plastic
Missing upper engine mount bolts
Ruined rear hubs
Heavy rust on head pipe
Etc etc etc.

The good: Its a three wheeler!

Did you know that even if someone doesn't post on 3ww they might still be involved? Did you know that almost no-one knows this site exists?

If I were a site owner I'd want new members. Any site owner that doesn't care about membership, well, you can make your own predictions

Are you trying to get banned???

Did you just get this machine? What's your plan for the front end? 200x? Still waiting on that write up. Got a 83-85 front that's I want to put on the trusty old yamahauler.

Anybody here ever rode an ATC over 1200 miles on the highway in 5 days?

Just one of us.

One single person did that.

I raced today. I won.

Set goals, be the best.

Never said I'd do a write up.

Yes I just got it last week.

Yes I still have my other DX.

This one ended up with the original front end from that one.

OF1 nope, I'm trying to be me. It does get me banned from time to time. I think I'm up to 4 bans now! Settin records man settin records.

And Moozy the 200x front end is nearly a bolt on save for the steering stop.

Here is this project again, pre washed and taken down to frame.

The last dx I built sold for $1700 on eBay. I had less than 400 dollars into it.

Not too shabby for a no-talent moron hillbilly hack.

Back to the bike in progress.

Going back together, had a much nicer swingarm and shock sitting around for 2 years so I used them.

230868

Also replaced the triple with a cleaner unit and cleaned and greased the bearings. Smooth motion.

You Hillbilly Hack pretty darned good. Love the decals on that 225. Did you do those yourself of who did them for you?

Thanks dirtweed.

The custom graphics on the DX above were done by DCvinyl&graphics. Dave Tomo is a member here although not very active. Pretty sure his handle is yameeha225dx. He will likely be designing some new graphics for my other other DX which is shaping up to be quite a rig.

Dave's work email is info@dcvinylandgraphics.com

He did include two ratty stock wheels with a pair of fast trekkers for the rear, but they are too small to run on a bike that cannot be easily re-geared. I had the fast trekkers dismounted and tossed the wheels.

Luckily I had some old Chen shins laying around already on much nicer DX wheels for the rear, and a nice match for the front mounted on a nice front wheel I had for a spare.

I bought it specifically to use these parts I've had sitting around before they drive me crazy and I throw them all away. Its going to be my 'beater' or backup trike for when anyone else needs something to ride or if I blow my other ones up riding like an idiot.

Back on 3.

Nice, I sure do miss my Yamaha 225DX, great trike.

DohcBikes
04-27-2016, 01:25 AM
Buy one!

Removing the rear brake guards will gain noticeable braking force. The assembly flexes more with the guards attached. It also traps water during rides and will reduce your rear braking ability to virtually nothing when it happens. They also discourage most owners from performing maintenance such as greasing the disc splines. I throw them away. Proper adjustment is key.

Somewhere out there is a trike with Tractor Supply fenders that needs these wheels.

The Wicked-X fender blanks came from www.E-Trailer.com.

My other DX has the original MSO. It could end up with plates on it.

why do you like to ride these old slow tiny trikes on the street. i mean i have a 70 that i cruise around the neighborhood on saturday afternoons but im not out impeding traffic on a highway.

DohcBikes
04-27-2016, 09:32 AM
So you do it illegally. I see.

The Wicked X topped out at almost 70mph. Only once, 500miles into a trip, two days after the first highway test, when at altitude, was the jetting so rich it wouldn't keep up. I also passed dozens of cars at over 60mph on the same trip. I guess maybe you're talking about someone else?

Next.

That one makes me feel better about my $200 drs purchase - smokes like a pig and is missing 5th gear

DohcBikes
04-28-2016, 05:30 PM
This one smokes too. Lots of old Yamahas do.

When you feel the urge to rebuild the top end, one option you will have is to use a 225XT piston for a nice little bump in compression. This one is getting a fresh hone, std. size xt piston and new rings whenever I find the time. My other DX has a 2mm oversize xt piston.

Decided to go with racks and skid plates on this one as well as a trailer hitch I've been storing for 4 years. Full utility. I'll get some more pics up soon.

I think Im gonna go a lil wilder on mine. Planning on getting a wiseco, porting the head, small camshaft and see what I can do for a bigger carb.

I've decided to pass this on to my brother so we can ride together. He is a member here, jman311, and this is his first 3 wheeler, or off road bike of any kind. He's a Yamaha guy so it's meant to be! Here's a progress pic from last week or so. 231245

That's awesome you gave that to you bro. I've got 2 older that gave me countless items, most of which we couldn't tell our parents, AND I would have to work for in some way. But never a 3-wheeler! Way to go.

And no worries here about your postings. I'd think most folks here are thick skinned to that and understand nobody's perfect. Stay off the sauce and you'll probably be fine.

Btw. That trike turned out nice imo

DohcBikes
05-05-2016, 12:44 AM
Thank you! Projects not done just yet! And knowing Joshua, it will get better and better through the years. He's a member of the Kearney Powersports team, as many here know, a very trike friendly environment :)

Getting fitted for some racks and stuff. Going to pass on the tank bags I made for the X-pedition, give it some soul. Jman was there every mile of the way! Going to also make him a front rack. He wants a lot of cargo carrying capability. Likely will get a case mounted upright somewhere for the AR15 in the future as well. He is soon to order a set of 22x11-8 Mudlite AT's for the rear. Front tire suggestions are welcome.

Probably not going to update this thread much more, Jman311 will be posting the continuation in the near future, as I will be bringing it to him next week. And for the record 'passing it on' doesn't mean getting it for free, He is trading me for an item I have been longing for a while, to cover a chunk of the $ I have into it. I will post a link to his thread here when it starts.

Here's another pic with no racks. Tinkered with it all afternoon, tuned the carb etc. It runs awesome, wheelie monster!

Yes sir it was, and I paid him an extra 50 dollars to bring it to me from quite a ways. It looks a LOT better now, J-man has installed new tires all around, a full DG exhaust and is soon to be installing a higher compression top end! I think i'm visiting him tonight, I'll toss up a pic here with the new tires.

Bottom end from yours truly with VERY low hours on the bench waiting for a few more OEM top end parts. Even got the Yankees sensi in there for all the Massholes.

Something I started a while back to clean up the future pull-start delete. Not done yet.

And for the heck of it, Here's a teaser of what I've been playing around with.
