Im putting my motor back together on my 85 200X and am a little confused. On my wiseco instructions it shows the front of the engine is in line with the piston pin center line. But the motor, the pin runs perpendicular(east/west) to the motor, not North/south as the instructions suggest. I just wanna make sure i get this right the first time

Heres the diagram

So basically, where it shows to put the oil expander is the front of the engine. Not at 9 ocklock as the diagram suggests

Hmm, odd. Here is how I set mine up.

looking down on the piston with the arrow pointing away from you.

Oil expander ring gap towards exhaust
Compression ring 1 gap to the left of arrow
Compression ring 2 gap to the right of arrow

Now 180 degrees (back of piston)

Top oil rail gap to the left of centerline
Bottom oil rail gap to right of centerline.

So basically scratch out that engine front on your paper and write it on the bottom of the page.

The way i went with was standing at the front of the motor Looking down on the piston with arrow toward myself, which is the exhaust side. So arrow is pointing to the exhaust side(front of motor) and then i put the rings EXACTLY how the diagram shows. Even though the front of the engine isnt where it says it should be. So the expander gap is 90° from wrist pin at 6 oclock, then bottom rail is at 2oclock, top rail at 11 oclock, 2nd ring at 9 oclock, and top ring at 3 oclock. Theyre all spaced right so Hopefully itll be ok. Oh and btw, nobody should EVER consider using the Moose top end gasket set. The fit is HORRIBLE!

YaegerB, ok after reading through yours again, mine and yours are exactly the same, we just were looking at it from the opposite side, you had exhaust facing away from you and i had exhaust facing me. So are rings are avtually exactly the same. So if yours are good, im confident in these as well. Just odd that Wiseco has the wrist pin showing that its parallel with front and back when its really side to side

Exactly what i ended up doing, before i even read your post lol.

Whoever put that diagram in that box works for isis.. That is completely wrong. Oil rings are always at pin, 180 off. Any good stagger on the top two is good,I always do close to 180 also.

I put the compression rings 108 out at each corner of the piston pin. then the oil rings are 180 out front to rear. the expander I have sit between the top compression ring side and the bottom oil ring so it is not aligned to anything. I have been doing this all my life. was shown this from a top fuel racer and always done it since. makes it EX, fast and reliable. something not so common in building.

Well damn, hope this works out. Got me nervous now. Was gonna fire it up tomorrow

So basically, do i need to take the whole motor back apart? Im gonna contact Wiseco and ask what the deal is with their clocking instructions. Not only is it the diagram thats like that, but theres also a paragraph for each ring and where it should go. I just followed the directions, other than the fact that the front of the motor was wrong on it

As long as you don't have ends lined up, you should be fine. I have never heard of putting oil compression rings anywhere but wrist pin at 180.
