I have a 86 200x and I want to put 83-84 250r forks in. I don't really want to weld a steering stop on because Its pretty much all original so I don't really wanna cut and weld on the frame even though it's just a steering stop to use the 83-84 triples. The 83-84 250r forks are 2mm bigger. Will taking the 2mm out of the triples significantly weaken them? I have 3 sets of triples so not really worried just wondering if anyone actually broke their bored triples

Or if anyone has any input on different forks on a 86 200x I'd like to hear

get atc350x triples, they are a exact fit. You have to get 85 tiples, if you don't want to change your races in the frame. If you get 86 triples, it uses tapered bearings and you have to buy the kit to convert to tapered races.

You can have a machine shop bore the triples out the 2mm you need. But if your changing forks, why are you worried about a steering stop? What are the chances of ever going back to stock? If you bite your triples you will have to get new set if you ever go back to 350x stockers. Plus the spacing on the bottom will be different so more custom work. I highly recommend you use the 250r triples and do the steering stop. It is EZ and will save you a ton of issues later.

Having your triples bored should be ok. A member over on Air-foolers had his first gen 81 250r triples bored to fit 84 250r forks they work just fine. He had a custom front hub and axle made because the 81-82 250r has a wider frontend. He got the idea from an old pic of a team Honda racer with this setup on an 82 250r. I think it was Mike Coes race trike. 230329 230330 230331

Hey man I did the 83/84 conversion on my 85 200x I had a machine shop bore the R triples to accept the 200x steering stem. It's that easy. However I did notice that the R front end threw off the geometry without an R shock to replace the X shock in rear. My X currently has the stock front end until I get an 83r rear shock and dogbone to fit.good luck

Do I have to swap out the stem that connects the 2 triples? And wouldn't you need to do the stop for the 350x triples?

Bore the R triples to accept the X steering stem bolt it up go riding.its really that easy. Oldskool83 helped direct me and it worked.

I will ask you guys with changing the front end to R or 350x did you also change rear shocks to match.

Im planning to do a similar fork swap. I have several ideas. 1. Bore my extra set of 200x triples and install 83-84 250r forks. 2. Press out the 200x stem and put it in the 83-84 triples and put 83-84 250r forks on. 3. Do the same as 2 and have them bored for 85-86 250r forks. Either way I go the 200x will get a DG plus 2 swingarm with either 83 or 84 250r rear shock. My DG swingarm is the linkless style.I want a kickazz 200x MX racer.

Number 2 was my route. Cost me 20bucks at the machinists to bore the R triples. For me cost is everything since I'm on a fixed income

That looks sweet! How bad is the geometry thrown off? i know next to nothing about suspensions.

My X rear is 50 in wide. It made it feel tippy like the stock tires and axle were back on. Also caused tit to push the front. I lowered the forks and all, but was told if you change front rear needs changed as well.

Thanks for the info man I don't know if it would help your case but I'm pretty sure you can get a 10 inch wheel for the front and that should lower it some

Anyone know how to solve the geometry issue?

oldskool83

you use 83-84 250R triples and put the 200x stem in the R triples. End or story. If you want them bored send them to HREatv.com I've had a few sets done that way also. Stay away from 350X triples, they have no rake in them.

I'm not now. I asked oldskool about that. He told me to get an 83r rear shock. I have the stock front end back on till I can get the rear parts.

its 100% different.....non link, 3" of travel worse then a factory 200x shock. You can only use 1983...both bikes in photo have been done the same way...not my 1st redeo. I 250R all my 200x's and they handle like it too.

They are both nice bikes. So your saying I need to find a way to mount the 83 250r rear shock on my 2nd gen x?

no, you only need 83 shock for 1st gen 200x. 2nd gen 200x just use you factory 200x shock and get it rebuilt and set up correctly.

I agree, most triple-trees are fairly plain, but form does follow function in this case. You can always jazz them up by polishing, painting, or a profuse amount of racing stickers.
