so after reading tons of great info on my kicker slipping i replaced the one way bearing on the clutch side of my 85 250 sx. easy fix but after I fired it up it seems the top end tics more than i remember, maybe just exhaust flange? but is there anything I could have goofed up while cover was off. I know that the oil feed to head comes from this side. I have no oil leaks and it all went together well.

Sounds like it's time for a new timing chain , very common issue . Or for a little more life you can install a manual tensioner .

When does it tick? All the time, only low rpm (just off idle), or in the higher rpm range?
Personal experience I had was a tick/light knock just off idle into the mid rpm range. Turned out to be a bad rod to wrist pin, it was worn on one side, but tight on the other. Not trying to scare ya or anything.
You didn't remove the oil filter did you? If you put it in backwards it could starve the top end of oil and probably cause ticking too.
Since your one way bearing was bad, what was the surface on the crank like where the one way bearing goes? One of the machines I parted out was nicked up pretty bad, I suspect that could cause a ticking type of noise too.
One last thing besides what has already been suggested... valves out of adjustment?

The SX has allot of oil passages so make sure all is well. RTV sealant is terrible for a 4 stroke. Honda, Yama, 3 "BOND"...
