View Full Version : Just right or just a tad lean?

This came out of my 185. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160328/1f829301b8baa2a2d896cf902afa508c.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160328/fae1bd9adaed643f6307f3de156796f8.jpg runs fine. But I loose power after 3rd and I'm guessing it's because the pipe has so many leaks. (Some one had a honky welding job going on)

A tad? I would say a lot lean.

I was always told it should look like coffee and creamer... guess this proves I put too much creamer in my coffee then lol. Back to tuning the carb I go!

That is way to lean for my liking, plus change the plug out, that thing is eroded.

Hey, mine is a light coco brown, but only because I spray tan.

In some cases lean and mean wins..but not there! You'll end up blowing a hole in the piston.

Perhaps one plug cooler, one main jet bigger and let your thumb off the bar once in a while!!

Electrode should look like a brown paper bag and the porcelain should have a 2mm thick chocolate ring around the base of the plug (you have to cut the threads off the plug to see this though. I would most definitely look into figuring out what jets you have in that carb and setting it back to stock.

If the carb is stock and depending on the year of your 185; a 40 pilot, 108 main and 1-3/4 on the pilot screw opening should get you in the ball park.

Also need to run a good filter.

Looks lean as the experts have said. You probably won't fry a top end running it like that, but I would definitely give the carb a thorough cleaning and see what jets you have. As far as you know the main could just be clogged. A set of tip cleaners for a welding torch will clean the jets out good.

The 185 isn't really a high performance engine. I've had a modern 4 stroke 250F lean enough to where the header is glowing red (those carbs are the worst to learn on). The engine bought the farm about a year ago. Not because it was running lean, because I didn't want to make the owner pay for the tools and head work required to build it correctly -_-

On that topic though, first gen rmz/kxf 250 would make a great engine swap for a trike. Killer low end and mid range, top end falls flat though.

Just put a new top end on it and run it without the muffler that should fix it. If not do that 15 more times lol

Seriously though maybe you have an exhaust leak.

make it stoppppp

No, I'm curious,

Is this a "customers" bike you ran with a "glowing header"?

You're not making a lot of (no) sense here, and giving bad advice on top of that.

No wonder you're having so much problems with your R, if you think what was shown in the pictures is perfectly fine and you clean carb jets with a torch tip cleaner.

I would have to give you the whole story to make any sense. I'm assuming you don't know what a torch tip cleaner is, but they're great for cleaning very small precision hole (like you would find in jets)

you have to cut the threads off the plug to see this though

Hence the term "Plug Chop" ;)

I love ramming torch tip cleaners thru my soft brass precision drilled jets. Its way more fun guessing what they flow instead of using the littler numbers they have.

Yes indeed, but when guys hear plug chop their eyes roll in the back of their head and they start puking pea soup (kind of like when you say "pressure testing"). Figured I would give the steps rather than the title.

The brass is hard enough that you would really have to work the jet to make any difference. I'm not suggesting you humid in there and actually enlarge the hole i'm not suggesting you jam it in there and actually enlarge the hole just use it to lightly clean the jets.

i blow my jets out with acid....then I use compressed air

yea, that's leaner than a yoga convention.

you need to fatten it up about 3 sizes to start. that should get you in the ballpark. remember the main is just 1/2-wot throttle. the low to mid is needle/mixture with idle jet. looks like she runs fat down low and thin up top.
picture a turkey. fat body and thin next. that is what you got. you want to lean the bottom out some and thicken the top to be more of a Pamela Anderson style. ;)

if you want to manually enlarge the hole, get yourself a set of piano wired drill bits off ebay. should be around $10 for 3-4 sets shipped. you can then put the bits in backwards into the jet hole till you find the size and then drill using needle nose and a paper towel holding the jet. use the needle nose to turn the drill bit. remember in those the drill bits are about 1.5 sizes in each direction. so if you want to go 3 up as discussed. go 2 sizes on the bits up.

God speed!!!!

Then get a new exhaust and try again. It pointless to try and tune a turd. Good filter, good header, and some kind of muffler then begin tuning. Otherwise pee directly into the moving air.

10-4! Hopefully now there will be 2 or 3 fewer that get that look on their face and can actually connect the two. ;)

There may have been a Pork Chop at one time, but we do have a very cool and talented guy that goes by Iron Chop and he knows how to perform a Plug Chop and I am sure he can BBQ a mean Pork Chop too!

Pork Chop is Ironchop's son. I've met them both at TrikeFest. If I remember, he fouled a plug in his Tecate. Maybe we should have called him Plug Chop instead.

There is a member named porkchop but it isn't my son. I know because he went to sign in with that new nickname Andy (CRAZY70GUY..?) gave him and he said it was taken already so he was bummed.

His Tecate isn't/ wasn't running yet so it would have had to have been his 200X.
