My 185 pull start gets hotter than the top and bottom end. Thus can't be normal can it? The string doesn't completly retract unless I Rev the engine up. And hand feed it back. Do I need more grease?. I don't see any obvious signs of rubbing

If your needing to feed it back in, you need to rebuild it. Never had a pullstart get hotter than my engine.
Pull it apart and see what's wrong.

I had that happen to me once too. Turned out the flywheel wasn't torqued down on the shaft(I used a homemade woodruff key when i was 14, baaad idea) and the burrs on the starter cage were spinning the top plate ratchet spring cover behind the E-clip.

I pulled it apart and every thing was okay as I could tell.

I loosened the bolts a little and that seamed to help. So I prolly need to torque my fly wheel then?

is the gasket in there or if it has the decompression cable assembly to the pull start is the metal plate in there?

Again, if your having to feed it in everything is not ok.
Did it come this way or did it snap and you rewound it? Whoever did it last didn't do it right.

At least tighten the tension on the rope. Super easy to do without taking anything apart. There is a notch on the pulley that you use for rewinding it.

Is the flywheel missing the little fan blade ? Mounts between the cage and flywheel.

I rewound it. It has ALOT of compression if I don't pull it right it jerks out of my hand and feels like my finger got ripped off from it. I noticed where the stator wires come out, the case for the pull start is cracked. So I'm done messing with it. Time for the engine swap
