I had an '83 when i was 12. I got it and a parts bike for $100 that i had earned shoveling snow during the winter. Two glorious trike filled years, (my friends had them too) and i got the bad news. We were moving. I was 14, my family was moving to Florida from Jersey. My beloved trike couldnt fit during our move, and i ended up giving it to a friend on the day we were leaving :( . Not much i could do about it being a kid. Fast forward 17 years, and i now have a family of my own. A beautiful 6 year old step daughter, and now, my own son. Mark Jr. Or M.J. as we call him. Hes 7 months old now. And he is JUST like his dad!! Long story short, my love of trikes never faded, but i havent owned another one since i was a kid, until now. Ive been looking for a few months for a project, that one day i could pass down to my son. Last month i found it. Two actually. For $200 i picked up the trikes. Neither running. No seats, no rear fenders. Only one gas tank, lots of spare parts. Extra axles, swingarms, sprockets, calipers etc etc. One was an 85, and one an 84, according to the vin decoder on this site. I decided on building the 85. There isnt enough quality usable origin228970228971al parts for a restore, so im doing more of a resto-mod. Will end up with white plastics and graphics of an 86, bc i really like the white fenders on trikes. Anyways, heres a few pics of the beginning when i got them. And ill post more of the progress i made so far, and the progress in the future. Stay tuned!228968228969

I will be doing as much of the work as possible myself, in my garage with the tools i have now .... Frame stripped down to bare metal, with aircraft remover, a drill with various attachments, and lots of elbow grease. Repainted,(yes i know, powdercoat is the way to go) but this was my only option, as im not trying to go broke in the process. I used Sunrise Red, about 15 coats lol, followed by at least 10 coats of clear.228972

Swingarm done. Ive put new bearings and seals, 100% in the entire bike so far. Even the ones that were still good, got replaced with new All Balls, bearings and seals. Swingarm, rear axle carrier, steering stem bearings, front axle bearings and seals. 228973228974228975

Rear shock, swingarm before and after. I had to cut the swingarm bolt. I marred up the threads a little getting it out(first time doing it) gotta learn from my mistakes. So i got it out just enough to cut it and get the swingarm off. Then bought a nice slightly polished bolt for $40 on ebay228976228977228978. Yes 40 for a bolt!!!!

Front forks, new oil seals, wipers, and fluid. Then polished up pretty good. Triple trees as well. First sanded with 220 grit, then 400, then 800. Then buffed with tripoli, then white rouge on my drill.228979 Not perfect chrome, but the y look great compared to the black chipped rusted cr*p they were

I do need a few miscellaneous grommets and what not. I could improvise but would prefer honda oem parts. So if anyone has some, ill take them off your hands! Would rather not pay the $15 per grommet ive found on Ebay. At this point i know i need, the engine skidplate grommets, and the rear grab bar rubber pieces. Oh and got a DG grab bar in as well. 228980

Got a few things done today. I got the bars that were really rusty and overall crappy looking, sanded 220, 400, 800, then polished. Came out great! Like chrome! Along with the triple top clamps. Also got the hubs painted. Used appliance epoxy, about 5 coats a few minutes apart. Have used it on a go kart frame and if you let it cure fully before messing with it, it is tough as nails! Also got a new make/model sticker placed on the frame 228997228998228999228996

Got my rear shock back on. Filled it with nitrogen this morning. The guy was only able to get 250 psi into it. Hopefully doesnt make too big of a difference. Starting to come together! Gonna send the cylinder and head off this week for a bore job, and head rebuilt, new valves, springs, guides seals n all that. Oh, also got a nice shiny new cheapo tail light off ebay. Exact copy of the oem, (hopefully the quality is too!) 229166229167

SHEEEEE'S A ROLLER!!!! After getting the rear shock nitrogen filled yesterday, i wanted to see how it sat and felt, so i thew the hubs on and some little 19" roll around tires. Adjusted the shock pre-load pretty tight(im 6' 2" 250). It feels great! Not too soft, not too hard. Ordered some polished Itp wheels, and gonna go with 20x11-8 ITP Holeshots for the rear. Still got a long way to go but shes coming together!

Putting new tires on mine this week, and I think I'm going with Razr's in the rear. Any reason why you went with 20" instead of 22"? Just trying to get as much info as I can before I order.

Honestly, just because i think smaller looks alot better. I was thinking 18's, but the roll arounds i have it on right now are 18's and it sits too low for my liking. So im going with 20's and gonna throw a 13T front sprocket on to make up the difference

Got the head sent out to get rebuilt by GH Discount Atv Supply for new valves, guides and seals and bead blasting, cylinder should be sent out tomorrow if i get my piston kit in. Went with 10.25:1 Wiseco 65.5mm kit. So itll be .20 over. Got the bottom end stripped and painted. Looks pretty good IMO. Thinking im gonna leave the top end bare aluminum and the bottom black. Got the CR rear master cylinder mod done. Well, mounted. I used a thread on 3WW as reference. Drilled out the CR master bolts holes with a 5/16 bit to accomodate the stock 200x bolts. I only made my spacers .300 instead of .375. That allowed me to use the stock bolts in that spot rather than needing longer ones which i didnt have, i had some too long, or too short. So i gave it JUST enough room with the .30 spacers to re use the stock bolts. The master is off of a 2002 Cr 80 i believe. Cost like $18 for a nice working part. Heres a few pics.

Thanks. Still waiting on my cylinder head to come back. Got my cylinder back last week from getting bored, head is out getting rebuilt with new parts, they had to replace one of my guides bc it was cracked. So taking a little longer than expected bc they had to order the guide. Once that gets back i can put this girl together

Thanks. Still got a ways to go, but hopefully have it finished this month. Still need all plastics, going with white front and back, and red tank shrouds. Front fender from an 85 250R, looks much better imo. Need front master cylinder, both calipers. Havent decided if im gonna ditch the parking brake and use the CR and Kx ones yet. But ill get there. Cant wait to ride this thing! I also recently picked up a running '79 110 for 75 bucks. Wont be going as deep as the 200x but will probably start a build thread

Are those 18's on that? Still deciding on 18's or 20's. Also, ive read 400EX hubs will make it a bit wider. You happen to know how much wider? And is there a specific year i need to use? I already have new 3+5 ITP wheels for it, that offset will give me 2 extra if im not mistaken. I believe the stock 200X rims are 4+4

I would say it depends on what you want to do. If you are gonna throw lawn mower tires on it and flat track it, then those might work good as long as you can keep from exceeding the max axle width rule a lot of tracks have in place.
Personally, I ride mostly trails and a wide rear end sucked in tight trails. I bent a wheel from clipping a tree. They also don't like tight turns at all and take a lot of body English to flick it around a tight radius

Three inches seemed to be just right for a slight stability increase but not too wide for woods.

Ahhh i didnt even think about that. I was just thinkin how badass it would look lol. Im in Central Florida, we dont have alot of places to ride unless i get the OHV pass, and even then alot of the places dont even allow 3 wheelers. My brother owns some acreage here in town, mostly open field type areas, and a few trails. Ill probably stare at it in the garage and show it off more than i get to really ride it. Ill be wanting to every day haha. But itll be a weekend rider mostly due to lack of riding places nearby
ironchop
04-04-2016, 09:30 PM
It would definitely look badass.
If your brother has open field type areas, then buy those hubs and go out in one of those fields and cut you an oval track if you can and ride there. The kid who bought mine cut an oval track on the lot next to him in town because he didn't have a running truck to haul it out somewhere to ride on trails.

Incorrect. 200x hubs vs 300ex/400ex hubs are only .75" wider per side. if you fun offset rims then you add in the extra inch per side.. Wides on factory axle with offset hubs are 10/11" wide tires you will get is 45-45.5" wide. I sell billet 1" wide spacers for 200x in my eBay store. They are 47.95 shipped. I'd sell you a set of fresh 400ex hubs but another member already sent money for them.
My bike is 49.5" wide with 18's duro berm raiders on a 300ex axle...and no it does not bolt in. I will ride mine in the woods also. All my other bikes are 48" wide also. Most trails now days are wide nuff for 4ft due to quads getting bigger over last 30 years.
22" tires are over kill for a 200x, most are 4 or 6ply which are way heavier then the 2ply ballons it came with. I run a 18" x 11" on 8" rims. I currently run factory LTR450 rears. My tires are 4ply and one of the lightest I could find. I saw you were looking at holeshots or maxxis razr. Razr tires are 4ply but honestly I have put holes thru them easier then 2ply tires and they wear fast. I would not recommend them. Holeshots seems to be stronger but also wear pretty easy and are not so cheap. I notice more off brands seems to be stronger and last just as long if not longer. Go with a flat profile rear tire you can slide with, that's pretty key on how your going to turn. My last 200x I had ITP gncc tires on the rear and it had too much side bite and would not slide nice...I went to factorty LTR450 rear tires and I could move it around super easy. You can see some examples of my bikes below I've built.
If you want a nice 20" tire which is right between 18" and 20" I would say look at Artrax MXT, they make a 20x10x8 and it really is only 19" tall with offset lugs which you can slide nice and climb loose hills too, plus they self clean pretty good and are a super thick 4ply. Never put a hole in one yet. They are on my wifes old 250ex. Another tire I loved were the stock 19" tires which came on the raptor 250's They self cleaned and slide nice and even climb in loose stuff but they only come in 9" rim.
I however like 18" tires on 3 wheelers, they just seem to handle better.

Maybe I was wrong with MXT's coming in 8in rim. Prob is just the MXT-R tire which is 2 ply due to MX purposes. Some guys I knew had them on raptor 250's and they did well.

You will want to take your factory seat holder and cut it up, then drill a 1/4" hole thru it, go to lowes and add some rubber groomets and nuts so its rubber mounted. The Maier fenders do not have the tap that the seat holder needs to fit in and if you do not use it they will just flop all over the place.
see attached photos. I do this on all my 200x fenders.

The rubber Grommets that are dished and long help the fenders to rest on your frame, with out that say goodbye to new frame paint and your seat profile will just bend. I had to be them NOS. Very hard to find. I install them with silicon in so they can never really come out easy.

Update. Got the new fenders mounted up. Looks funny with those roll around back tires. Itll look good once the new rims and tires go on. Also got my cases split to put in the new oem gaskets to seal a crankcase gasket leak. Good thing i did find the leak and split the cases, because i found a chunk of glass inside the case!! Had to be from the previous owner bc he had the top end off. All bearing look and feel good. Got a Dr apptment w my son tomorrow so hopefully get them back together on thursday. 230387

Little progress the last few days, got the entire bottom end apart and gone through. Any case bearings replaced that needed it, followed by NOS oem gaskets all the way around. STILL WAITING for my cylinder head to gome back from GH discount atv. Theyre replacing one of my valve guides as well so they had to order it. Also picked up a CR80 complete front brake system for $15 off ebay. Front caliper will go on the back. So the parking brake will be deleted. Also picked up a KX80 rear caliper for the front. So the entire braking system will be updated and upgraded. Pics to follow when everything installed

Got my FrankenBrakes finished up!! So all together, i have for the rear, a 2002 CR80 master cylinder, and a 1995 CR80 Front caliper on 200X bracket. For the front i have the Master from the 1995 CR80 that came with the caliper, and a 1998 KX80 REAR caliper on the front with the stock 200X bracket. Everything went together really easily, and i even managed to get front and rear bled the traditional method by pumping and opening the bleeder. Although, for the front, i did have the caliper off its mount, and held it above the master. Once i did that it was like magic and little by little i started seeing the piston move. And now the front brakes are solid as a rock. The rear is gonna need new pads, and a little more bleeding. But i have brakes!!! Im going to upgrade to SS brake lines before the final build unveil. The rear needs probably a +4 brake line as it doesnt lay on the swingarm right, but i mainly wanted to get this together and make sure the Fleabay brake parts were all gonna work.... Anyways, Heres a few pics

That's coming along nicely. I have a spare frame and swing arm I'll be restoring soon and doing a swap over with. Hopefully the frame is ok under the 103 coats of paint on it. I have my doubts though.
Question. I just finished installing the kx80 caliper up front. How hard should the brake lever be and how much travel? Mine starts grabbing as soon as you touch it and if you pull at all it brakes hard. Total travel is maybe an inch.

Question. I just finished installing the kx80 caliper up front. How hard should the brake lever be and how much travel? Mine starts grabbing as soon as you touch it and if you pull at all it brakes hard. Total travel is maybe an inch.

You got yourself some SuperBrakes haha. Mine dont grab like that. And idk what would cause that. My caliper barely moves on the slide pin

Yeah mine barely moves either. There's very little travel on the lever. I guess it's not bad. Just have to remember not to throw myself off with it.

Yeah, as a matter of fact, how did u get them bled so good? Theyll probably have a little more give for you when there weight on the bike. Or is it like that while riding too

Haven't ridden yet. Couple more weeks to get all assembled. I put a line into an empty water bottle, opened the bleeder, squeezed the lever, closed the bleeder, released lever. Filled reservoir as needed. Took 3-5 min. That's with the kx80 caliper.

FINALLY!!!!!!!. After almost a month, got my rebuilt cylinder head back from GH Discount Atv. It took a while because they had to replace a valve guide as well as the other stuff. They had to order the guide. Man, it looks FANTASTIC!!! Like brand new!!!!!. Couldnt be happier, and well worth the wait!

Just a suggestion, but couldn't you just buy a block of hard rubber and machine out the grommet you need for your seat?

So my motor is done. Cleaned up, bottom repainted. Ready to go back in. It has been COMPLETELY disassembled. Cases split. Inspected, replaced any worn parts, cleaned internally. It was broken in already on the bike, then i took it back off and cleaned it up nice for final details. Only thing left that i may or may not do is get a polished bolt set for the motor to dress it up. But havent decided yet as i am going to ride the shiit outta this bike. With love and care of course. 230953

Thanks. I painted the cdi cover, but the rest of the top is bare metal. not paint. They soda blasted it when they rebuilt it. Im not too fond of the head cover though. Its the previous owners attempt at polishing. And i dont know how to UNpolish it lol.

Got the motor back in. Exhaust everything mounted back up and ready to go. Just waiting on my XR carb (PD97A) and jets to get here and she'll be back up and running. Not even gonna bother firing it up until then. The cheapo carb is just not giving it enough fuel. So things i still need: white 85 250R front fender, red tank scoops, decals, and new tires to go with the rims i bought. Then things that are there and working but i want to upgrade are SS brake lines, new kill switch(mine looks janky) new levers, new brake pads, new shift lever, Headlight bracket, and maybe different handlebars. Here she is now as she sits

If you hit the head with a green Scotch Brite pad sprayed with a bit of WD40 it will have a nice brushed look to it and will hind imperfections too.
Note- only use the Scotch brand, there is a difference.

Depends what youre looking for. If you're bike is stock, go with stock carb. Or some jetting changes with minor modifications. Or you can upgrade to a Honda Xr200 carb. Any year i think 81-83 and 86-2002. Double check the years though. You can find them on ebay for relatively inexpensive. They do however, still sell BRAND NEW Keihin PD97A carbs for some of the later XR's. 2001,2002 etc. Part #'s 16100-KT0-L00 and 16100-KTO-A10. Theyre about 150 bucks. If im not mistaken its the same carb im going to be using which is a PD97A. But i bought mine used. If you do switch to the Xr carb as an upgrade, you also need to use the XR intake manifold, mine are both coming off a 1991 Xr200. The intake is also still available from honda for around $26 bucks. I would Stay away from the 20 and 30 dollar amazon and ebay carbs. They may work just the way they come if you have no mods, but idk what jets you could use, if any if you needed to change anything. I tried one and my bike would only idle really really high bc i didnt know what jets to use or if any other brand would fit. i have a full pipe and filter, stock airbox, 10.25:1 wiseco

Got my XR200 carb in today, and a few different keihin jet sizes. Carb came with the intake, think i paid $50 plus shipping for the combe. So not bad. Pulled the bowl off and it is already SPOTLESS. But ill still give it a pine sol bath just because.

Got the Xr carb in. Got everything working. Had to mod the XR throttle cable to work by shortening it and resoldering the end that goes into the carb slide. I threw my oem front fender and tank shrouds back on for the time being. Just wanted to ride this beast and see it almost complete. So i am still going with a white 250R front fender, and red maier tank shrouds. Just havent gotten there yet. Also need my decals, and tires for my new rims still. But for now, it runs, rides, stops and is mostly complete. Still have to play with the jetting some. Was expecting a little more power outta this carb setup. Hopefully when i get her jetted right ill reap the benefits. I have the stock XR 110 main in, and a 40 pilot. How she sits at the moment

You cant go wrong with the 250r front fender it looks so much better than the stock one. Don't worry you will eventually get it all dialed in. I have been rebuilding my 200x for about a year now and I have just about got everything like i like it.

Looks great, I am about to start my assembly on my 84 (I clean and restore parts as I disassemble so I don't hit he the point mid-project where I just want to stop, by the time I start getting tired of the build it is already in the reassembly portion). I dig the look of the 18's. Looking like a great build, you are keeping me motivated to finish mine.

Thank you. And Yes, im going with 86 decals. I like the rear fender decals, also going with a white R fender up front, new levers, and some SS brake lines. Then itll be all done. Just been pretty low on my play money so been going slow. Hopefully have those last few pieces done this month

Love it .im a 200 fanatic .not enough credit given to these potent sleepers. I got a 185s thats gonna be a flat tracker. Ive got this big idea of putting an x motor on it and a front end off the x as well. Then i can have a disk brake up front .
