View Full Version : Explain Kawasaki Model numbers? C1, C2, C3, A1, A2 What?

So I'm trying to figure out some interchange details, and it almost seems like the C1, C2, C3, A1, A2 note after the model is somewhat critical. Is it like different generations of the same machine instead of being cut off per year like most honda's did?
Example:
1983 KLT250-A2 KLT250 CHASSIS ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT ('83 A2)
vs
1983 KLT250-C1 Prairie CHASSIS ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT ('83 C1)
I'm looking at possibly reproducing the harnesses, but I can't figure out the interchange, or even the differences. The part numbers I'm trying to figure out are 26001-4026 vs 26001-4018. The second one appears to be still in production and on the part diagrams it is noted as the "early production" model vs "late production".
Thanks for any help trying to figure this stuff out.

.
The last 4 numbers are basically for the model and year . . If the last 4 numbers are different, there definitely is some type of change in the part . . If they used the same exact part for different years and/or models, the last 4 numbers will be exactly the same.
The number after C and B, designates a newer year of the same model per se.
The letter is sometimes confusing and is supposed to designate a new model . . The 84 and 85 tecate are the same bike except for minor changes so they used the same letter which was A . . Also, A is "supposed" to designate the first generation of a model . . B "should" be a similar model with significant changes like the difference between the 84 and 85 tecates and the 86 and 87 tecates . . both are tecates but the 86 and 87 is a totally different bike, and nothing interchanges with the earlier models, so the 86 and 87 tecates have a B designation, so the first year of that model is B1.
I hope I have been able to totally confuse you, because i certainly am now .

Haha, actually that makes a lot of sense and I kind of was thinking along the same lines, but having it come from you makes me sure of it now :).
Now to really confuse anyone reading this.... this is the diagram I'm referencing:
http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Kawasaki/ATV/1985/KLT250-C3+Prairie/CHASSIS+ELECTRICAL+EQUIPMENT+%28'83+C1%29/parts.html
Target machine is 1985 KLT250 C3
Part is the main harness.
It lists two part numbers with a frame number reference, and the diagram seems to be for 83 C1, so the higher number frame number would reference C3, simple enough. However, the lower frame number references... C1 or C2, or both? I hope they didn't do part number changes in the middle of a "model run" aka middle of C3 (I have seen Honda do it on older models). Same machine has a link to a second diagram at the link below. It denotes 84-85 C2 at the end, so maybe the first one is the wrong diagram for the year? If that is the case, then it makes a little more sense for that exact machine, but then the 83 machine becomes confusing lol.

I have figured Honda's system out pretty well, but Suzuki and Kawasaki I'm not so good with yet. If there is a better site to use for the interchange details, I'm always open for options.
Thanks for all the details you post =)

I see, your info from above still solves a lot of mysteries so thanks for that :).
I don't own have a Kawasaki, so I suspect you're thinking of someone else? I made a harness for one before though for Dirt Weed.
and happy new year to you too =D. Things are pretty good around here, hopefully things are well with you as well.
