View Full Version : The things I do for her 2.0 ATC 125M BUILD

So a few years back I built my wife a 3 wheeler for her to ride around with me. It was an 85 atc110 that had been given to me by my dad's neighbors. It ran after swapping the carb for a good one and It needed plastics and a new tank so we swapped out the tank and bought a set of fiberglass fenders in pink. This is what it looked like after a few years after building it. I had taken the tires for another project temporary lol.

Fast forward to 2014 and a few weeks before trikefest and my wife says she wants to change the color of her 3 wheeler. So she picked out a purple and some krylon glitter blast paint and we set about painting the fenders, tank and forks purple with a glitter coat over that. It turned our pretty good and everyone that seen it at trikefest loved it.

All was well for a year or so until this year. That is, until I got the idea to swap everything over to a 125m frame and engine so she would have the convenience of electric start. I had most of the body parts swapped and went to give it a test fire because I hadn't heard the engine run since I bought it and reassembled the clutch cover.
What happened next really sucked, I had put no more than a gallon of gas in the tank and turned the gas on to start it. It started 2 pulls and and I was excited to finally hear it run. I looked down and noticed that the petcock was leaking down the side of the engine and onto the floor. I reached over to kill the engine with the kill wire since I didn't have the switch hooked up and when I did it killed it for a second then fired back up. When it did the engine backfired and caught the leaking gas on fire (I didn't have an exhaust on it for the test run since it was supposed to be an on and off test) and then caught the 3 wheeler on fire. In less than 20 seconds the fuel lines melted and dumped fuel directly into the fire. Luckily, my dad and I got it out of the garage and put out. But not after the fire did it's damage to the 3 wheeler.

So after a lot of thinking I decided that instead of salvaging what was left of that one I'd build her a better one, with better parts. And thats where we are now.

So over the last few months I've picked up some new and used parts to build her a nice resto mod style 3 wheeler with some aftermarket and stock parts.
Heres a few pictures of the parts I've picked up

New fiberglass fenders

Aftermarket bandito race frame and a set of aluminum wheels with the dual 4x110 & 4x130 bolt pattern.
I've also picked up a few NOS stock honda parts with more on the way and a really nice chrome headlight guard that I purchased for another project but never installed. I'm going to build a custom battery box and use a modified stock harness to run a slightly modified atc125m engine. Its not going to be a racer so it doesn't need a big bore 90/110 engine or anything crazy like that. Its just going to be a really cool reliable ride for my wife and I to cruise around on at trikefest. Stay tuned for more after the holidays when I get most of the last of the parts I'm waiting on.

Worst thing for it to catch fire! Always thought about having an extinguisher mounted on my 350x, just in case! No idea where to mount it though! Shame shame but will be back better than ever for her!

Holy trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro eh? Caught on fire just like that? Damn trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotr ailpro shame, thanks for posting though it made me rethink my "safety precautions". Everything I own leaks gas.

More parts came in today. Other than rear hubs and front axle nuts and seals I'll have a roller

227504
Hub is from Spangler's, the wheel is a 10x6 with a 3+3 offset and the axle, center bearing spacer and outer spacers are all NOS parts for 76-81 90/110. I also ordered 99 new pieces of hardware for it a few days ago.

Nice project and sorry about your loss on the old one. Can't wait to see this one done.

You mention modified stock harness, what exactly are you modifying I wonder?
If memory is correct, both 84 and 85 atc125m's had the round cdi plug, if you have the tools to modify the wire harness, might be a good idea to "upgrade" to the 4+2 style cdi plug. The only down side and undocumented part is what cdi to run.
Good luck on the build, it don't look like the fire did too bad of damage, mainly tires, fenders, gas tank, and likly wire harness. My dad did something similar to his (now mine) 99 warrior he bought new. He rode it out in the winter time, and everything was packed with snow, so he used a salamander to melt the snow.. before he knew it the wire harness was melting and the battery box was starting to droop. Much longer and it could have caught on fire. If there are any used parts you need, shoot me a pm, I have a couple sitting around with engine problems and a couple atc110's as well (79 and 82).

Ps2fixer, I'm have to make mounts for the battery, regulator, starter relay and cdi. Also, the spot where the coil was placed is a different location than a 125m so I will have to modify the harness to fit all of the new locations. Not too big of changes but I suspect that it will be enough to not be plug and play.

Very cool start, I also have a 125m on a bandito. Makes for a fun trike.

Just a little update on the build. I oped for a little different engine than a 125m. I still have some work to do on the frame to get it ready for powder coat. As soon as I get some room in the garage I'll start getting it together.

Terrible story. I had an odd situation when i first started out. Burnt down my YT175 :( It to was due to a leaky carb. Burned through the fuel line in no time flat! After building a wire harness, replacing the carb, and intake. It was up and running again. he chain guard is kinda chewed up looking these days.
These are more than worth the cost. Walmart probably has them. https://www.ebarnett.com/Sku/871106?cid=SHOP_Barnett_Under99_PP_1_ALL_C&CAWELAID=120259710000018455&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=26759221486&CATCI=pla-160518657406&catargetid=120259710000025979&cadevice=c&gclid=CM64xdzy_80CFZE0aQodo-kA3A

Haven't made a lot of progress on this other than buying parts and hardware. I picked up some extended rear hubs that will complement the front one that i picked up for this build awhile back. I feel like it might be a little on the wide side when I'm done but we'll see how she looks at mock up. I finally have some room and time to work on this lol

what engine did you decide to go with?

1984-85 Trx125. I wanted my wife have the convenience of electric start AND reverse. Plus it has 5 speeds instead of 4 and no hi/low gearbox. I have a DG exhaust and plan on getting a performance camshaft for it. I've also found that the bolt spacing on the intake is the same as a 70 so a larger intake manifold and carb will be on order as soon as I find something I like. The exhaust might change from the DG if I find a head pipe and muffler that will work from something else. Still deciding on a lot of things at the moment.

One of the things I'm trying to decide on is what size and type of tires to run front and rear. I have a 10x6 front wheel and 8x8 rears. The idea of building it like an old school race bike has crossed my mind. I like the look of the mower style tires in a 18x9.5-8 on the rear but that leaves the front. Any ideas?

Carlisle turf tamers are always sweet. Don't know what size front you need but they have a good selection. Also Cheng shin makes a look a like.

I was thinking about using a 21x7-10 on the front since its a very common front on alot of atvs. I've found 2 that I like

The Kenda Max

And the Power King front knobby.
Both are 2 ply.

I have the Kenda on the front of my 350x. Great tire. Been through a lot of hard trail riding. So far no issues
