Need advice from 3 wheeled masters on 85 250r set-up

Here it goes,
I am rebuilding a beat up old POS with a stock jug, carb and a old FMF pipe. I would like this bike to be very reliable but stronger than stock.. What are your suggestions on the following:

1. piston; size, compression
2. porting
3. carb
4. reed cage - reeds
5. pipe-silencer

I don't want a top end only bike. I would rather have good bottom, great mid and decent top than killer top and nothing else.

Any special clutch set-ups besides stock?

I would get the top end rebuilt with either stock or aftermarket piston/rings/pin/pin bearing. The pipe should be fine as long as it isn't badly dented. Some aftermarket reeds will make a noticable difference if the ones in it are old. I don't have any personal experience with aftermarket cages but I don't think I'd bother with it myself. If you've got the cash, go with a Keihin 36PJ carb and K&N filter. I wouldn't bother with porting either since you don't want a top end motor. If you can do the work yourself, you should be able to get all this for about $350.

Get the head milled for a little more compression. Nothing race but more than stock. Compression is one of the best mods you can do. If you use a K&N get the outerwear for it. Go with reeds but pass on the cage. Make sure you have a good seal on that pipe. Go with an aftermarket flange if you need to. Bore it to clean it. No use going bigger there than you need to.

Oh, I forgot to mention, run the Pro Lite Wisco Piston. Stay with the stock bore until it's time to open her up a little more.

Tony_250r has a pretty good idea of whats going on. The only thing i would change is his choice of pipe. Go with either the ESR atc5, an LRD, or a Paul turner. These are the top choices for standard pipes on the 250r.

Hi Blaze.
I did'nt want to give him to much power, that's why I mention the FMF instead of the ESR or Paul Turner.

By the way, my set-up needs a Rev pipe, which one do you reccomend, the ESR or Paul Truner? I like both.

Curently I'm running FMF and Power Core II. One more question, if I get the Paul Truner Rev pipe with the welded on silincer, can the silincer be repacked?
