Is there anything you can put on your exhaust to protect is from rust and corrosion? Besides paint. Ceramic seems a good way to go but it weakens the exhaust due to holding the heat?

Ceramic does not hold in heat, when you cut the engine off they also cool faster. FMF Racing did some back to back dyno tests back in 1994, I saw the results and the plated pipes made more power.

Fair enough - do they protect your exhaust any?

I have ceramic on one of my 350x's. It won't rust, holds up better than anything to heat, looks awesome, and comes in different colors. But it will chip of if hit with gravel or rocks.
This is what it looks like in the silver finish.

Thanks for the reply! What did that set ya back?

I do alot of muddy trail riding here in western new York and my pipes do get muddy and I'd like to protect and preserve them as best I can - hence the thread

Out here in so cal. , everything costs more than anywhere else, it was a $100 minimum to coat it. It's probrably half of that anywhere else.

in fact, ceramic plating makes more power and lessens chance you getting burnt by hot pipe. When the gas stays hot, it flows faster and leaves quicker, it scavengers better. I personally wrap my 4 strokes with exhaust wrap, I find they run cooler(especially on dirtbike that header is inches under the right radiator) and your leg can hit the pipe and not burn your pants/boots. I'm not sure how much more power it makes, likely not too much more, but a cooler running motor always makes more power than a hot running motor and runs more consistent.

Will this ceramic coating aide in protecting the pipes from mud/corrosion?

.
1. true ceramic coating is used as a thermal barrier just like exhaust pipe wrap, which means that it keeps heat IN the pipe, therefore your pipe will run HOTTER with either of these but unless you have a high hp engine, it won't "weaken" the pipe.

2. although most of the colored exhaust coatings you see do have some percentage of ceramic in them, the amount is so low that it only has a small affect on the heat emitted by pipes that are coated with it . . contrary to some information found on the net, this reduction in temp is usually around 100 degrees and sometimes a little more . . since the exhaust pipe can get up to 900 degrees on many vehicles, and boiling water, which is only 212 degrees at sea level, can feel quite uncomfortable if one sticks their finger in it, this means that the exhaust will still quite effectively remove your skin if you touch it while riding etc . . I have done this exact “test” more than once with ceramic coated pipes and I was very displeased with the very painful results.

3. the only “true” ceramic thermal barrier coating is actually pure white, which is because that is the natural color of ceramic . . it is also around 1/8” thick after it is applied to an exhaust pipe . . most of the colored “ceramic” coatings are around 1/64 thick.

3. true ceramic coating can reduce the temp emitted by the exhaust by around 300 degrees.

4. ceramic coasting and header wrap does not make an engine run perceptibly cooler.

5. There are different qualities of colored ceramic coating . . one of the best ones is called “jet hot” . . you can possibly find a place near you that has this . . a high quality coating will last many years and protect your pipe from external rust. . a poor quality one will last many weeks and your pipe may rust quickly . . I would expect it to easily cost at least $100.00 to coat it in any state in the us . . they will also blast it clean first.

this is true ceramic coating . . not too pretty imo

some places can achieve a smoother satin finish like this . . a similar finish can also be achieved if the pipes are run through a vibrating polisher after they are coated.

Its seems that ceramic coating is the best/ only way to go -is that accurate? Is there any way to protect the inside of the pipe or will the carbon take care of that?

it depends exactly what you goal is.

it is more durable and more resistant to chipping and scratching than the colored coatings, and it will make the exterior of the pipe cooler than the others, but it will still remove your skin if you touch it when riding.

if you have a pipe that is easily replaceble, you could buy another one for what it would cost to have most of these coatings applied.

also, all these coatings can get stains.

heres more info.

I'm still waiting for someone to build a trike that looks like that pipe.
