OK I ordered a chain for my 85R and it has the same number of links as the last chain but after I installed it I noticed that its way too tight and I've already moved the carrier as far forward as it would go, any advice, it's a non O-ring chain.

My guess is it has to be the carrier, double check that it's in the right position. Or you got a chain with not enough links but you said it was the same as your other one. A stock sized chain has 96 links (13/39 gearing).

If the old chain was really stretched, is it possible someone removed a link to compensate?

Was thinking the same. How many links do you have and what does Honda call for?

.
can you post a photo of the rear gear?
with the chain wrapped around the rear sprocket, i would grab it at the very rear of the sprocket and pull it fairly hard away from the sprocket . . if you can pull it out around 1/4", the sprocket is likely pretty worn which will reduce chain life.

The chain has no slack which why I'm thinking it's too tight, as for how many links are on it I want to say 96 it's a Volar chain from rocky mountain that showed up when I typed in the make and model, as for the sprocket it's the stock sprocket but it's not worn at all, do I need to remove the bolts from the swing arm when moving the carrier or just loosen them because I only loosened them but didnt completely remove the bolts, thanks everyone for all the help it's greatly appreciated, I'd buy everyone of you a beer.

Start by counting the links on the old chain and then the new one. If they match it should just be a matter of adjusting your axel carrier to get the adjustment right.. If you can't adjust the carrier count the teeth on both sprockets and report back.
Good luck!

buy a new chain that is longer or buy an extra link and a half for it or go to a real hardware store or tractor shop or matarcycle shop and have them cut a piece of chain that is 2 links long and one that is 3 linls long and use the one that works best.
