would there be any benefit in swapping out my 85 motor to an 88 trx 250r, besides the longer rod is there any other differences like transmission and or electrical differences. Can i just use my existing atc cdi or do I need to get all the electrical from an 88trx. I heard the newer motors are more reliable is there any truth to that. Anything else I should know or be aware of on these? Thanks in advance

Its a direct swap. The wiring coming from your 85 stator has different plugs and will be the only thing you will have to modify.

x2, direct swap other than some electrical plugs. In OEM form, 85-89 250R motors are all reliable...its a Honda. Where it gets dicey is when joe-bob decides he wants to work on it without the proper tools, manual or mechanical inclination.

Thanks guys yea I know it's a direct swap just wasn't sure if the 88 version has any mechanical/electricial upgrades and if it is any benefit to use the 88 over the 85

If I was going to do a 250r swap. I would drop in the CR250R motor harness electronics. Pipe and porting will get over 50HP
