Needing to order a couple parts for an 86 kxt tecate. Looking at the thread about parts swap on Tecate and what I gather is....up to 2004 for both parts.
1) I need to order a kx 250 case saver for it. When did they start making them silver?
2) need to order a kx 500 angled intake. The reed cages' perimeter plastic frames I have are distorted badly at the top where it touches the intake. What year kx 500 angled intake to get? I reason that the same year reed cage will be needed. Reading that there were some changes in the intakes at some point but the bolt pattern remained till 2004. I'd Like to order once if ya know what I am saying...:wondering
3) hoping all years take the same reeds, i already have new ones.
4) a good place to buy the air filter and the outer protective cover? Somewhere that specializes in airfilters and size options.
Information greatly appreciated.

Off road inovations have deferant size air filters and outer wear prefilters.

Ok, that filter really looks to be in the way with the angled intake! I have the straight intake and I will order a new reed cage for an 86 kx 250. Glamy, thanks for helping me avoid something that I wouldn't have liked and Towboater, i will call ori for the filter and maybe he has the cage too.
Anyone have advice on a case saver? Thinking some of the late model Kawasaki motors and case savers were silver. There was a silver one on the $7200.00 kxt that just sold on 3bay.There's been reproduction vmx casesavers on there with a salty overseas shipping charge that disinterests me. Maybe I can make one.

The silver motored kx's started in 1988 and up.
I think I read somewhere guys are using the 1993-1998 KX 250 case saver and guard.
I am pretty sure I have a good one, can you measure the center to center on the two holes on your Tecate?

I have an angled intake that is a Boysene Rad valve for a KX250 and a Uni pod filter. It does not stick out too much because there are different sizes and angles of filters.
Dont buy a half foot long filter.
Or You could go straight boot and angled filter to keep it off the shock. Or pancake or whatever.
Lots of KX250 case savers work. Last picture should show moose case saver, I had one of those OEM KX silver ones on my 86 KX250 too. The OEM ones are plastic but are supposed to have a metal piece that goes on first. The ones sold on ebay often do not have that. KX500 case saver might fit too..

Those pictures look like the filter is not in the way so much. I just don't want to run a straight intake and have a dixie cup (small) size filter on there to avoid the shock. I am trying to gather stuff up so when I get a day I can accomplish and ride some, maybe. Rainy day is about my only wrench time anymore. I will check the measurment on the case saver then. Thanks again to all those with the talent and gifted/earned expertise and willfully helping folks round here.

the pick with the foam filter looks perfect, it is OK if the foam slightly touches the frame, it will NOT hurt a thing. we run with the filter touching 2 parts of the frame on my son's race quad. nothing we can do about it, but it works good. the filter comes off after every race and replaced with a clean fresh or cleaned and re-installed. so i's not like it's always dirty scrubbing the powder coating finish off. don't worry about the foam touching slightly. it is fine.
if the carb angle is not to your liking, you can always get a alloy intake made, then use a silicone hose and angle cut the ends to adjust it slightly up or down. I also did this on my son's race quad. helped to get the carb at the exact angle I wanted. I just used a straight piece of silicone hose and cut a slight angle on the intake side and then cut the rest of the angle I needed on the carb side. kind like this bot obviously much less angled.

so we ended up with a slight upward angle and the carb could sit with just a very slight upward turn that was not too great.

Take a look at this place. I used their stuff to build my Tri-Z intake.

Here`s one other thing that i did`nt like about the angled intake (it probably does`nt matter) but the carb does not sit perfectly level .....because it was never designed to run the angle intake on that trike !..... the angle`s not level and with the Kuni it dumps fuel constantly ! So if you go strait intake and offset filter even if it touches the shock i think you`re better off !
With the angled boot the carb does NOT sit level as pictured. But also pictured are a Mikuni VM, a Mikuni TM, and a Keihin, all of which I have run without issue or leaks other than the famous float needle valve leak most Mikunis develop. Replaced needle valve and rode on.
Besides...if your front tire comes off the ground in every gear your carb will be level...right?
I think I am running 5" now but also have dual stage 4" (second picture above, third below).

The pancake is uni nu-1409st is for KTM 50 but it is 44mm mount and most 38mm carbs are 43mm spigot so it should work.

Well someone should take the plunge and buy one to see if it is a good setup for the Tecate then add it to the parts swap thread. Pretty easy to return stuff through Amazon if it dont.
