Going to look at a 84 tecate that doesn't run today. I have no experience with these. Anything I should look out for so I don't end up with a green boat anchor? Thanks for any input!

84 frames like to crack around the peg mounts
84/85 frames like to break under the seat between the grab bar mounts
84/85 radiators have 3 mounts and they like to crack and leak
Plastics can be hard to get and expensive when available except tanks
Make sure it has the CDI box under the tank. Those are hard to find.
Probably not running because the stator is crap.
Would be a good idea to pull the exhaust and look at the piston.
Otherwise, look at it like any other 30 year old toy. Chain, sprockets, bearings, brakes, tires, seat, missing parts.
Some missing parts are hard to replace - like the OEM air filter cage if you want to go that route. OEM lights.

Oh boy. Well it doesn't hurt to look. Thanks for the advice. Is $500 a good deal if it checks out ok?

$500 doesn't sound bad. but you could end up spending another two grand on it just to get it going and trail ready.
there an awesomey a force to be reckoned with however

I'm a cheap SOB. A $500 non runner better be complete and fairly nice otherwise.

Ya guy hasn't got back to me since this morning and I think I talked myself out of it. Probably a good thing too. I think my wife would recognize a new one that's not red like the others. Thanks for the great info though.
