Has anyone tried putting a tri z triple tree on a 225 dx?

I just recently bought a 84 225 dx for my girlfriend. Tried to post a pic but this app won't do it. Anyway, I want to put a tri z front end on it. I tried with just the forks but they are about 5 mm too big. So I want to ask you guys before I tear into a bigger project than I expected. Can I swap out the triple tree easily. I have a lot of tri z parts.
