I have a83 250r that is seeping oil from the head gasket. when i tightend the nuts one of the studs started to come up instead of tighting. are the studs pressed in or screwed in or what?

are you sure the head isn't just going down?? honda used a pretty much foolproff system of putting the studs in there, so they actually tighten into the casr when you tighten the head down.

hey mate

i have the exact same prob with my 84r but with two of my studs they are stripped the studs screw into the barrel and they r both stripped out.And when i tighten the nuts the studs just come up i have to get someone to put two helicoils in there or something.i cant ride mine 4 long because the head comes loose and starts backfiring out the head its that bad but my money is on youve got the same prob as me take the head off and unscrew the problem stud and check the thread in there hope this helps.

I had the same problem and ended up taking all the studs out and drilling down about 3/4 of an inch then retapping the holes. It didn't leave a whole lot of thread for the nut to bite on to, some of the studs went a little farther down than I wanted, so I think on one or two of them,I had to grind down the surface (of the head) where the nut seated. It worked great, now they all torque down.
